Montreal rock band, ERA 9 @ Mary Irwin Theatre on Tuesday, May 29th

The band is set to take the stage of Rotary Centre for the Arts – Mary Irwin Theatre on Tuesday, May 29th, as part of their headlining tour throughout Western Canada. The tour is sponsored by HMP Music and will showcase pop/rock artists and bands from across the country. ERA 9 has been making quite the noise around Canada, having already appeared on Much Music and CBC, and I’d love to set something up for while they are in town.

ERA 9’s self-titled debut album, produced by Pierre Pineault and generously financed by Gail Issenman of Green Door Music Inc., released on May 20th, 2011 to a sold-out crowd at Plaza Theater. Their first single and music video “Goodnight” has been generating positive reviews from a steadily growing fan-base proving that the band’s genre bending antics are sure to turn more than a few heads.

ERA 9’s meticulous attention to detail and charismatic live performances are a testament to their hard work and has earned them the privilege to play in some of Quebec’s elite venues such as Le Medley, Bourbon Street North & Bar Chez Maurice, ERA 9’s vision of modern rock is poised to contribute to today’s music scene and is certainly a promising sign of things to come. Wandering stylistically from funk to heavy metal, ERA 9’s music remains rooted in their classic rock sensibilities. This mish-mashing of genres is not surprising given the band’s diverse approach to song writing. From hard-charging rhythms, sharp hooks and soaring vocals to gentle acoustic ballads, the members continue to inject new life in contemporary rock.

Anchoress, Northern Guard and Westshore Falls – Friday, May 25th

The inception of Anchoress can be traced back to the Spring of 2010. The fated meeting involved two dudes with beards bonding over a Ruiner shirt at a party. In the rapid, gushing friendship that followed, it was revealed that one represented a guitarist and singer looking for a rhythm section and the other represented a rhythm section looking for a guitarist and singer.

The four then holed up in a garage for several months writing songs that they thought sounded fun and gnarly. In February of 2011, they entered The Hive Studios with Jesse Karr. The product of that session was the album, Set Sail, which they self released on March 4, 2011, to positive reviews.

The summer of 2011 was well spent playing various shows around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, including the 7th Victoria Hardcore Festival.

The fantastic foursome spent most of the fall of 2011 writing new material. 2012 was ushered in with style: A rad house show and a music video released (for ‘She-Devil’), with more shows on the way. On February 14th “A Night at the Movies EP” was released for free online download. It features a brand new song and a Set Sail b-side.

After toiling in the trenches of the Vancouver music scene for the past decade, Dominique Fricot is finally starting to hit his stride. With his commanding stage presence, unrivaled songwriting skill and ear for creating pure pop masterpieces, Dominique owns the stage with his rich baritone and his emotive fusion of rock, soul, folk and jazz. Don’t believe me? John Lucas of the Georgia Straight says: “Fricot’s plaintive vocals and knack for melody invite comparisons to Chris Martin and Adam Duritz”. Legendary local producer Jeff Dawson has called him ‘the new Neil Diamond’. Whatever you call him, the comparisons don’t do Dom justice. He’s a true original, a one of a kind talent, and a rapidly rising star. Don’t miss his unique blend of charm, stage domination, and relatable, heartfelt music.

Ciseaux is the most recent endeavor of Victoria, BC artist, Katie Schaan. Melodies swam around her head and danced out her rosebud lips before she was old enough to even know words to speak. That tiny girl lived three years of life before hitting the stage with a tiny cello, and there was no stopping her from music making after that. Ciseaux is inspired by everything from Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, to soulful melodies of the 60’s, to the imaginative indie persuasions of her peers. This is a project evolved from classical training, a love of pop music and an unwillingness to be limited by genre. Ciseaux’s debut EP, produced by the illustrious Aidan Knight, will melt your heart and make you want to dance all at the same time.

Mallory Scott sings songs about being a highwayman.
