Oliver Swain in Kelowna, this Saturday @ Benvoulin Heritage Church

Oliver Swain has been a celebrated musician for years, held in high regard in acoustic and folk music styles for both his astonishing instrumental and vocal abilities, though he seldom gives the genre a fully traditional treatment. Oliver Swain strays towards the whimsical, the spiritual, and the socially conscious side of what he likes to refer to as “chamber folk odyssey”, and it’s these beguiling and provocative elements that make him unique as an artist and songwriter.

Oliver Swain got his start performing and writing with many of the US and Canada’s most loved roots bands including The Bills, The Duhks, Outlaw Social and The Red Stick Ramblers. He’s a two time Prairie Music Award (WCMA) winner, Juno nominee and has a few “M” (Monday Magazine) and Times Colonist Music Awards under his belt. In 2011 he released In A Big Machine, hailed as “Absolutely mesmerizing”and “one of the best albums of 2011, regardless of genre”, touring across Canada and the US including Folk Alliance International, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Calgary Folk Music Festival, and countless others. Between his own shows and tours, Oliver also runs the Victoria Django Festival each February in his home city, and recently toured as one half the Leonard Cohen tribute duo project Tower of Song, as well as playing bass and some vocals with his new rock band, Fans & Motor Supply Co..

Nils Loewen seeks to break down the Performer/Audience split. His songs are set around catchy melodies with audience percussion and harmonies. With his cello, mandolin, and guitar he melds classical training with campfire grooves. Nils has been a performing around the Okanagan with the bands Richie and the Poor Boys, Leo Piano Trio, and Birds of Cray, Swamp Honey as well as supporting many other projects.

Saturday at Docs – Double Fuzz with Woodhawk and Bad Animal

Double Fuzz
Calgary’s blues rock duo Double Fuzz have been constructing their amplified sound since 2012. With their dirty guitar riffs, menacing edgy vocals and punchy loud drum licks, Double Fuzz has people turning the volume to the max.
The recent release of their self titled debut album has received great review and Double Fuzz graced the cover of Beatroute in celebration of this release. The album was recorded with the talented Jesse Gander at The Hive Studio in Burnaby BC, who has recorded with Pack AD, The Black Mountain and other great bands

Wood hawk
Under heavy influence of the riff, ales and Star Wars, Woodhawk brings riff rock to a whole other level. Formed in summer of 2013, Turner, and Mike began jamming with various drummers until they stumbled upon long time friend and colleague, Meishka Corrigan. Founded on the love of 70’s rock with a modern swing, Woodhawk was born.

Bad Animal
It all begins in Calgary, Alberta – their stomping grounds on which they unleash their wicked punk-infused rock n’ roll grooves. Among the group, is a musical common-law marriage between Marek Skiba (Guitar) and Trevor Stoddart (Drums) which began over a decade ago, playing in varying incarnations and genres. Sticking together has created a creative connection that cannot be taught. Bringing together Ben Painter (Vocals) and Kyle Gritchin (guitar) to form what is now Bad Animal. Live, Bad Animal are undoubtedly an exciting band, explosive stage presence and an all around performance that will keep your ears ringing and will not be forgotten.

Flashback 16 years: Great Big Sea in NYC, March 18th, 2000

Back in 2000, Great Big Sea had been around as a band for 7 years at this point, and I was lucky to see them a couple times that year.  The New York show was as much a high-energy show as the early shows in St.John’s when I was at Memorial University in 93/94.
