Praise For TRST

“The best of synth-goth’s both worlds” – Pitchfork

“Moody, skulking pop that reminisces downcast ’80s dance at its best.” – The Fader

“A grubby dance-goth sound that’s meant for late nights, crowded rooms, and dark spaces.” – Nylon

“The wiry and slight Alfons cuts an Ian Curtis doing a twitched-out running man figure, sounding perfect for the part with imporbably dulcet, appropriately clenched post-punk vocals.” – Stereogum

Locarno – Saturday night at the RCA

Locarno is the Latin project of Juno award winning musician and Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa. The music, like him, is part Mexican but with strong doses of Cuban Son, Folk Music, Pop and Funk. There are threads of Son Jarocho and Salsa but the songs are more edgy and contemporary than that. The music could be compared to Manu Chao, Ozomatli or Rodrigo and Gabriela but although there are similarities it is truly original and a new flavour in the Latin music genre.

For the past few years Tom has been writing and recording the material for his project Locarno. His goal is to create music which is heavily influenced by Mexican music but using the elements and musicians around him in his hometown of Vancouver. A key element to this sound is the partnerships he has created with producer Joby Baker who has worked with several World/Latin artists including Alex Cuba and Miguelito Valdes who lends his trumpet and percussion talents to the project. Miguelito was born and raised in Havana Cuba and has played with Afro Cuban All Stars, Omara Portoundo and The Buena Vista Social Club. Rounding up the group is Sam Esecson on drums and percussion, Kalissa Hernandez on Violin and vocals and Nick La Riviere on trombone.

Singalong Saturdays at Pheasant & Quail Pub starts Saturday, Jan. 19th

Andrew Smith has assembled a top notch band. This winter at The Pheasant and Quail Pub, Andrew and his band “The Public House Band” will be hosting Singalong Saturdays. This weekly event will be the talk of the town.

Starting in January the pub will be rockin with the sound of people singing together! The band has prepared an evening of oustanding singable songs that we all know and love.

This is NOT Karaoke, and it’s NOT about whether you are a great singer. It is more in the tradition of Irish/Scottish pub singalongs or the ‘chansonier’ pubs of Quebec – where people come together and everyone sings – just for the fun of it.

Indeed western Canada seems to be one of the few places in the world where this isn’t part of the culture – and so many of us have not experienced the joy and sense of community that comes from sharing a pint AND a song with a hundred other merry-makers.

So let’s build a new community tradition – right here in Kelowna – where we can all come down to the local pub and join in the music.

January 19 at 8:30pm until March 16 at 11:30pm
