Grapes of Wrath – free concert event on Wednesday, August 28th in Waterfront Park

“GRAPES OF WRATH” REUNION TOUR MAKES STOP IN KELOWNA FOR FREE SHOW

Festivals Kelowna, K96.3FM and Music BC will be presenting Kelowna’s own “Grapes of Wrath” in a special, free concert event on Wednesday, August 28th in Waterfront Park as part of the final “K96.3Wednesday Night Showcase” of the 2013 Parks Alive! Entertainment Season presented by Okanagan Strata Management.

“We’re always looking for unique elements to include in our Parks Alive! program each year,” explains Renata Mills, Executive Director of Festivals Kelowna. “In fact, we started planning this event last October when we learned the ‘Grapes of Wrath’ were touring. When we heard about the reunion tour and knew the boys were from Kelowna, we connected the dots with timing and our partners, and voila – a great end of summer show was created.”

“The Grapes of Wrath” was formed in Kelowna in 1983 by brothers Chris and Tom Hooper, and childhood friend Kevin Kane. They took their name from the Steinbeck novel which, ironically, none of the band had ever read. Signed to Vancouver’s Nettwork Records in 1984, they quickly rose to critical and commercial success with Canadian industry legends like Tom Cochrane and Sarah McLachlan working with the band, leading to platinum-selling albums and industry acclaim. Following the band’s break-up in the early 90’s, they reconnected in 2010 and began to work on new material, resulting in a brand new album in 2013, “High Road”, their first in over 20 years. The first single off the disc, “Good to See You” is already garnering rave reviews with its upbeat, catchy sound.

“The timing of this special Parks Alive! concert couldn’t be better,” enthuses Mills. “After talking with the band we discovered that this show on August 28th will be almost 30 years to the day of the very first ‘Grapes of Wrath’ show. How cool is that?”.

The special Parks Alive! concert will run from 6:00pm until 9:00pm and also feature the winner of the ‘K96.3 Artist Development Program’ produced by Music BC as the opening act. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch, blankets or low lawn chairs, and join their fellow Kelowna residents for a wonderful night of live music. Admission to the show is free, but Parks Alive! will accept cash donations at the event with all proceeds directed back into the program.

Parks Alive! is a production of Festivals Kelowna, producer of family-friendly events that enhance the lifestyle of our residents and visitors through positive cultural experiences in our parks.

Paul Mercs Concerts and Metropolitan Entertainment are pleased to present the following fifteen-date Canadian tour for Grammy Award-winning folk-rock duo Indigo Girls:

“Whenever we play in Canada, it’s always a total blast and we come away talking about doing a whole Canadian tour…this has happened for years, well, decades actually…so I am super psyched about this tour,” says Amy Ray.  “We’ll be driving a lot so I’m excited to see more of the country.  There will be many cool venues and just a whole new experience of people, places, and things.  I know it sounds corny, but for real, this kind of tour keeps us on our toes and inspired.  I’m looking forward to meeting new communities and getting a new perspective.”

Emily Saliers adds, “I’m really looking forward to doing a real Canadian tour.  I find Canada beautiful, diverse, and interesting, and I want to get to know the country and its people more closely.  There is no better way to do that than to go town-to-town, playing shows along the way.  I can’t wait to play more shows in the land of the greats: Joni, Neil, k.d., Siberry, The Tragically Hip and more.  Excellent times await this journey.  It also feels like starting anew in small, intimate venues.”

Decades into their career, the Indigo Girls still amaze conventional pundits with their ability to grow and thrive despite the changing state of the music industry.  Emily Saliers and Amy Ray began performing together in high school.  Since then, they have had a recording career that consists of fourteen studio albums, three live records, and three greatest hits compilations.  Of these releases, seven reached gold status, four reached platinum, and one hit the double platinum mark, with cumulative sales in excess of twelve million albums in the U.S.

With the duo’s tour history spanning twenty-five years, as well as their staunch dedication to a number of social and environmental causes, the Indigo Girls have earned a devoted following over the years.  So many artists who launched their careers in the late 1980s have slipped from our collective memory.  In contrast, the Indigo Girls stand tall, having earned the lasting respect of a multi-generational audience.

Making their mark on the airwaves with two weeks at #1 on CBC Radio 3’s R330 Chart, Winnipeg’s Federal Lights will bring their prairie-pop sound on a string of Western Canadian tour dates to support their upcoming album We Were Found In The Fog.  Following a hometown performance in Winnipeg the band will take off for Germany to begin their first European tour.

We Were Found In The Fog sees the band at its sharpest.  The hooks are more refined, the lyrics more precise, and Jean-Guy Roy’s timeless, resonant voice is as clear as a bright blue Prairie sky. Recorded in the heart of a cold Winnipeg winter, the album marks Roy’s second time in studio with Engineer Cam Loeppky (Weakerthans, Greg MacPherson, Cannon Bros.) and with the help of producer Rusty Matyas (Imaginary Cities), this time around things are more focused and more efficient. “I get extreme anxiety in the studio and those two gents were able to make it such a relaxed situation, with the help of a moderate amount of Irish Whisky of course.”

Federal Lights is a band born out of necessity. Beginning in 2010 as a solo experiment for Roy and a chance to explore new sounds it quickly became a vital bridge back into making music with the release ofCarbon in 2011.  Joined by bassist Rob Mitchell (The Attics), drummer Chris Gaudry (The Shouting Ground, The Mission Light), and Roy’s wife, keyboardist/vocalist Jodi Roy, what started as one man in a cold storage room is now a whole theatre of indie rock anthems.
