Corey Doak
Joshua Smith
Jordan Matchett
Glen Koide

Corey Doak
Corey (with last name pronounced like “oak” tree) has been doing his thing for over 10 years where he has been busy recording 5 albums, winning awards (like the ’09 Covenant Folk/Roots album of the year), playing hundreds of shows around the globe, sharing the stage with legends like Martyn Joseph, and concentrating on growing his hair out. His songs have a unique blend of story, offbeat humor (see Scruffy the Elf video), psalmistry and poetry bound to cause you to either laugh, cry, sit up and take notice, and/or all of the above. He’s a great writer with skills that pay the bills.

Joshua Smith
After learning to play the gee-tar at age 10 in his hometown of Halifax, Josh moved to Nashville, learned a pile of stuff, and then ventured on to the 13th best city in the world, Kelowna. His tunes remind you of words like folk, pop, chill, imaginative, and are influenced by the the artists frequently played on his iPod like James Taylor, Paul Simon, John Mayer, The Beatles, and maybe a few more. He also played Lille Gard Festthis past summer.

Jordan Matchett
Jordan is a bit of a newbie to Kelowna and a few of us met him busking on the street downtown playing an old Kay guitar from the 50s (details might be a bit off here). He played outside all summer and apparently was able to earn a decent living doing so but the winter months are too cruel for outdoor musician bravery, so we’re stoked to hear his tunes in the warmth of a cafe.

Glen Koide
Glen is a roots / rock singer songwriter who is one of the most humble artists you will ever meet. He was mysteriously injured in a bike accident a couple of months ago so he wasn’t able to make the Sept. Songwriter Circle. Luckily, he’ll be ready to strum & pick like an 8 fingered gecko. And as for that last analogy, we apologize & realize that it doesn’t make sense but you get the picture.

Hard Times Hit Parade- A Theatrical Extravaganza by the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret

  Date: Thurs January 19th 2012 7:30PM

Evening Show Price: $30 per adult / $10 per student www.selectyourtickets.com

This Dance-Until- You- Drop Marathon has rolled into our humble City!  In a world reminiscent of 1930s, reflecting the economic hardship of our present time, this full-length theatre production is chalk-a-block with swing dance, cabaret, live music, puppetry and surprise. Haunted by their own hallucinations, inner voices and deepest desires, the hidden worlds of the contestants come to life before our very eyes.

Hard Times Hit Parade features several dancing couples, as well as vaudevillian band Maria in the Shower playing popular songs from the ’30s and original compositions in a similar vein. “The band is very much part of the action,” stresses director Kat Single-Dain. “And the audience is involved as well, because it becomes the dance-marathon audience. The narrative is about a trio of organizers-the referee, the emcee, and the band leader-who travel the country setting up these events.”

The Rotary Centre for the Arts is transformed into a Depression-era dance hall for the show dubbed Hard Times Hit Parade where our audience will experience 5 and a half months of dance marathon in one night. The longest dance marathon on record lasted 157 days. We encourage everyone to show up wearing “Dirty Thirties” vintage threads, a fedora or your dancing shoes.

Next Tuesday – Jim Cuddy with special guest Doug Paisley @ Kelowna Community Theatre

With the release of his third solo album, Skyscraper Soul, Jim Cuddy announces he will be hitting the road this fall with The Jim Cuddy Band.

In the winter of 2011, following extensive Blue Rodeo touring, Jim Cuddy began to write music to accompany his wife Rena Polley’s comedic short film “Four Sisters.”  It turned out that writing music for the film put him on a creative roll and before long he was on his way to writing a third solo album.

Live music around Kelowna – Happy New Years!

It’s been another great year for live music in Kelowna.  The inaugural Pop Okanagan festival was a big hit, and lots of Canada’s top indie bands passed through town (and a few went to Penticton’s Barking Parrot instead…K-os, Sloan, Mother Mother and the Sheepdogs) We’re closing the book on 2011, and looking ahead to more festivals, great local artists, and more touring bands passing through the Okanagan!
