John Fogerty in Kelowna, Sept. 27th – performing CCR album at Prospera Place

By Darryl Sterdan, QMI Agency
John Fogerty will cross Canada with a double-barreled Revival show this fall.

The legendary swamp-rocker’s upcoming 16-date tour – tellingly (if rather wordily) titled Wrote a Song for Everyone: John Fogerty Performs Live! The Albums of Creedence Clearwater Revival – will see the 66-year-old singer-guitarist performing CCR’s 1969 LP Bayou Country and 1970’s Cosmo’s Factory in their entirety on alternate nights, along with a second set of hits.

Fogerty’s trek kicks off Sept. 8 with a Cosmo’s performance in St. John’s and works its way west, wrapping up with a Bayou show in Victoria on Sept. 29. See below for a full list of dates, cities and venues, along with the featured album.

Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday May 4 or Saturday May 5 at Ticketmaster, and are priced between $20 and $70 before fees and taxes. In Toronto, tickets max out at $100. Willie Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson and his band The Promise of the Real are the opening act.

Fogerty’s vast catalog of hits includes CCR classics like Suzie Q, Proud Mary, Down on the Corner, Born on the Bayou, Have You Ever Seen the Rain and Fortunate Son, along with solo chart-toppers such as Rockin’ All Over the World, Old Man Down the Road, Rock and Roll Girls and Centerfield. His upcoming album – also titled Wrote a Song for Everyone and due this fall – will feature newly recorded versions of his oldies along with new songs, performed by Fogerty and a slate of guest stars.

Said The Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft. The pair’s debut EP, Taking Abalonia, featured sunny west coast indie pop, with breezy harmonies, shimmering guitars, and lyrical tributes to their home city of Vancouver. In 2008, the album was rereleased as Howe Sounds/Talking Abalonia, featuring seven additional tracks that stretched the band’s stylistic palate to include bubblegum folk “The Light Is You”, thundering hard rock “Last Tree Standing” and gentle ukulele ballads “The Real of It”.

After several personnel changes, the group settled upon a five-piece lineup that included bassist Peter Carruthers, drummer Spencer Schoening, and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown. The quintet embarked upon a rigorous touring schedule, crossing Canada numerous times and landing high profile gigs at V-Fest 2008 in Calgary and the nationally televised Canada Day celebration on Parliament Hill.

Following the teaser EP New Brighton, all of the band’s efforts have culminated in the new full-length Little Mountainout on March 6, 2012. Named after the band’s home neighbourhood in Vancouver, the 15 track collection was recorded at the city’s Blue Wave Productions studio by returning producer Tom Dobrzanski (The Zolas, We Are the City). The producer’s experience working on both of the band’s previous albums meant that he was able to help the Whales realize their clear vision for the project, which they fine-tuned during an extensive two-month pre-production period.

“Tom is amazing to work with because he’s a friend and in the studio he becomes like the sixth member of the band,” explains singer-guitarist Bancroft. “He knows how we operate and he knows how to make us perform our best, and is able to capture it on record.”

One Night Music Fest – Four artists, one amazing night of music at the Streaming Cafe – April 28th

Andy Shauf – Barely past 20 years of age, Andy serves up a collection of new-folk pop songs that begin and end with sincerity and meaning, patiently unwinding a theme of memories and moving on. It is a remarkably mature display of craft by a young man writing beyond his years.

Jordan Klassen – Jordan Klassen makes music built out of pure imagination. A truly alluring voice, laid upon beds of shimmering strings, caressed guitar, and coaxing percussion. His latest work takes such a foundation, and continues to build.

Cara Luft – Singer/songwriter/guitarist extraordinaire Cara Luft is that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth yet willing to alter that fabric, stretch the boundaries, not afraid to bend genres and styles.

James Lamb – James is a storyteller with unconventional compositions and lyrics that explore the most contemporary issues in our Canadian culture, often originating in personal experiences with humanity. His live presentation can haunt a room with thoughtful joy, and his unique voice, fascinating composition, and commanding stage presence can plunge even the noisiest bar goers into mesmerized silence.

Steph Macpherson brings that Island feel to Kelowna – May 5th @ Fernando’s Pub

By Jennifer Smith – Kelowna Capital News
Published: April 20, 2012 9:17 PM

With all those ferry delays to cope with no one in their right mind would launch a music career from Victoria.

And yet, as places to write and seek inspiration go, Vancouver Island’s wet, wildly beguiling charm can outshine even a lurid lover affair as muse even from under its perpetual rain clouds.

“There’s this bay down by the Chinese cemetery and the walls of the rock cliff form an echo chamber like an outdoor amphitheatre,” says Steph Macpherson, a Vancouverite who has just released her first full-length CD, no doubt with plenty of accolades to follow.

Macpherson is really from Victoria, though she made the move to the big smoke three years ago in order to build her name and is nearly universally tabbed as hailing from Vancouver. To the city’s credit, one must admit the move worked. She’s already played Lilith Fair, the Rifflandia Festival, BreakOut West and been to Ottawa for JUNOfest.

And living first in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, then just off Commercial Drive, she got a taste of the high-brow, earthy culture that’s branded B.C. musicians. Yet, even before one flips over her album cover to see Cordova Bay Records listed as her label (Cordova Bay is in Victoria), one might suspect this girl isn’t really from the neighbourhood.

There’s a connectedness to Macpherson’s sound, something like Sarah Harmer achieves with songs for the Niagara Escarpment, though without the activist element, that really leans toward the Island life.

And where Vancouver might not scream alt/country, the genre Macpherson claims, her home in the working-class suburb of Gordon Head in the provincial capital, fits perfectly with her down-home, almost Acadian feel.

Setting aside her ocean-touched trill, Macpherson admits she loves the country instrumentation. With a ukulele, banjo and mandolin in her collection, one can see she has clearly picked a direction and plans on sticking to it; although admittedly she’s still hoping a banjitar might somehow miraculously find its way into her living room so she can get all that down-home appeal without actually having to learn to strum the banjo.

Her parents originally put her in piano and voice lessons to stop the never-ending flow of Disney songs—particularly from the Little Mermaid—and while she’s managed to add guitar to the list, she’s fully ready to admit it could take a little time to add the full range of sounds she would like to see in her music.

Humorous, fun and interesting to chat with nonetheless, Macpherson’s impending show at Fernando’s Pub should be a charmer.

Steph Macpherson plays Fernando’s Pub on Bernard Avenue in Kelowna along with The Archers on Saturday, May 5 at 9 p.m. There will be a $10 charge.

April 26th at Fernandos – Viridians with local artists Family and Here in the Noise.

Formally Amuse, Winnipeg’s favourite post-rock band is now known as Viridians. Viridians is a melody driven post-rock band that incorporates the technical side of metal, chest thumping rock tones with pop sensibilities to create a refreshingly new and exciting sound. Back at it with a strong and unique vocal style, Viridians is still a power house of instrumental rock.
