We Are The City – 12:00am
Since forming in 2008, Kelowna, BC’s We Are The City has become one of the most exciting and unpredictable forces in the Canadian music scene. The band soon began earning accolades for its atmospheric progressive-pop sound with the release of their debut LP In a Quiet World in 2009. We Are The City found themselves venturing into new musical terrain on their next release. In March 2011 the band released six songs entitled High School, the result of an experiment that began as a side project during some down time in the summer of 2010. On the quirky “Happy New Year,” West African-inspired licks give way to garage-y rock outs and fuzzed-out Rhodes piano. “Dark/Warm Air” takes a gentler approach, bringing together delicate guitar arpeggios with baroque pop breakdowns and a dash of tropical Mellotron samples. High School also allowed We Are The City to introduce the use of drum machines and string arrangements into their already very layered sound.

They also created an entire complimentary video series to the EP, alongside Vancouver based, Amazing Factory Productions, creating a unforgettable visual interpretation of the music.

“The visuals are stunning: Opener Get Happy features a super slow-motion shot of one of the guys jumping off a pier; Happy New Year is the classic basement performance video (complete with the smashing of light bulbs); That’s It, That’s All sees a member being punched in the face, bullied and beaten up by fellow teenagers; Dark/Warm Air is an underwater playland with multi-coloured glowsticks; 1987 recreates the song’s lyrics via video projections; and An Angel In White is the surreal, “out of the corner of your eye” closer to the series, recapping the key elements from the previous videos.
Throughout, the three members of the band wear white T-shirts on their heads as part of the album’s concept, and the video series captures the feel of the songs brilliantly.”
– Francois Marchand – Vancouver Sun

This fall in Canada they are releasing: “Mourning Song / Morning Song”, which is a two song, two-sided 7″ vinyl. A juxtaposition of the most beautiful alongside the most tragic. Life and death. The most beautiful thing: a waterfall and the pool below they found in the mountains of the Okanagan long before it was tarnished by spray paint and litter left by less-than-respectful visitors, now reserved only to memory. The most tragic: coming to terms with a friend’s death just after their graduation, and the dreams that followed.

With the completion of “High School” EP & “Morning Song / Mourning Song” 7”, the band members now have their sights set on a sophomore LP. While it remains to be seen in which direction they will steer their music, one thing is certain: We Are The City will continue their attempt to push musical boundaries and hopefully stumble across something not yet heard in the process.

Fields of Green – 10:45pm
High Talent, Depth of Perception, Soulful and Heartfelt. These are just some of the elements that make up this cutting edge Canadian musical force. FIELDS OF GREEN are on the cusp of world-wide recognition. A musical journey that started just four years ago, and one that promises to be with us for decades to come.

FIELDS OF GREEN began in 2008, and although young, this band belies their age in musical maturity. The four determined musicians hail from the vibrant beach town of Kelowna, British Columbia. Kyle Tubbs (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Kevin Dreger (Keyboards/Bass/Vocals), Connor Tkach (Guitar/Bass/Vocals), and Johnny Jansen (Drums/Vocals), make up this wondrous musical entity. All in their early twenties, the group displays unending measures of energy and creativity while displaying a musical maturity that ranks up there in the most seasoned of Rock Artists. In their creative space, they can meld various influences seamlessly, creating a familiar, yet unique sound that will fast become the FIELDS OF GREEN signature.

Multi-talented, all, FIELDS OF GREEN have met with one success after another. Their first album, “Blanktown” is consistent in its display of rich and varied musical tapestries. It won Rock Recording of The Year from the BC Interior Music Awards of 2011. They were also involved in the professional musical competition the “Peak Performance Project 2011”, making the Top 20 in that event. 2011 and 2012 have seen this group busy with writing and recording their new “Self-Titled” album. The group has joined forces with Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biffy Clyro, Hedley) and Paul Boechler, whom is producing and engineering what will be the band’s second full length record. No doubt, what we are about to hear will be deeper, richer tapestries that will land straight in our hearts!

Rocky Mountain Rebel Music – 9:30pm
This band has expanded to include 10 members from across the globe to bring a unique variety of musical experience and expertise. This diverse collective talent accounts for the band’s high energy and full sound as well as its broad range of musical influences. Charged by Reggae, Rock, Funk, Dub, Dancehall, Punk, and World Rhythms, Rocky Mountain Rebel Music delivers an original sound that defies comparison. Shredding guitars, bubblin’ keys, smooth horns, hand percussion, drums, and heavy bass form the rough and rugged foundation upon which vocals rise and fall like the tide on Vancouver Island’s rocky coast.

Daniel Wesley – 12:00am
We’re in Vancouver’s Warehouse Studio. In one corner, Greig Nori is hunched over a monitor. Twenty feet away, Dave “Rave” Ogilvie is mixing a huge-sounding rock number called “Head Outta Water”, complete with gales of electric guitar, ten-storey drums, and a classic fists-in-the-air stadium breakdown. In between is Daniel Wesley, who’s beaming like a 29 year old kid, clapping his hands above his head, and bouncing off the walls. It’s not hard to imagine 10,000 people doing the same thing.
Nori, Ogilvie, and the Warehouse – this is Wesley’s dream team, in a venue that he likely never imagined would open its doors to the bull-headed, self-made singer-songwriter who pulled an unlikely phenomenon out of thin air with “Ooo Ohh” four years ago. In fact, it wasn’t until his streamlined, Dave Genn-produced 2009 effort that Daniel Wesley even considered letting another person get their hands on his music.
“That’s the first time I ever worked with a producer,” he says.” Up to that point, I was like, ‘If I work with people, it won’t be what I want.’ But I was wrong. I’m doing better stuff now at 29 than I’ve ever done. I want to keep working with more and more people, and pushing the boundaries.”
Which is what he did, turning newest album, Easy Livin, into a bi-coastal odyssey in the process. Wesley hooked up with Nori and the Bedouin Soundclash rhythm section of Eon Sinclair and Sekou Lumumba in Toronto. Back in Vancouver, he tapped his regular players – bassist Darren Parris, drummer Tim Proznick, along with Hey Ocean! bassist Dave Vertesi – for a parallel session conducted by Ogilvie.

Wesley’s contribution to the enterprise is a batch of songs that veer from the breezy familiarity of title track “Easy Livin’” and “Dear Mary”, to the dubwise extensions of “Pirate Song”, to the fresh and surprising “Vagrant’s Life” – which finds Wesley in a cowboy mood, no less. “That song made me feel like I was driving across Canada,” he says, “staring ahead at nothing but fields of wheat. We thought, ‘Oh, we’ll put a shuffle beat on that.’” Gradually, Dunner and Sammy Masterson from Vancouver’s trucker country-kings Run GMC laid down banjo and slide. “The next thing you know, it’s an alt-country song,” Wesley laughs.

“You get to a certain point where you’re trying to broaden what you have,” he explains. “I mean, you just grow as a musician. You enter different head spaces.” You also learn that a song has a life of its own. And you submit to it. Which is why Easy Livin also features the thrillingly silky “Darlin’”, with midnight sax blowing across a velvety bed of lover’s rock, the insanely catchy guitar pop of “Hello Britain”, and guitar-and-horn driven R&B on “You and Me”.

Wesley concedes that pushing the boundaries is “also kinda scary,” but not so much that he doesn’t top all of the experimentation on Easy Livin with the insurgent, balls-out “Head Outta Water” – it’s the kind of earth-shaking power-rock song he probably hasn’t touched since he was playing basements in Langley.

“All of a sudden the chorus kicks in,” he says, breathlessly, getting excited again, “and the guitars are just huge, and I love it. Songs like ‘Argentina’ – the introspective ones – nobody will be too surprised by those, but I really want to push my limits, and my band’s limits. I think people will be happy that I’m starting to make music like this. I said to Nori, we should release a full-on rock record in, like, six months.”
Don’t be surprised if he does. Daniel Wesley is entering a period of peak creativity, and he has the resources and energy to see it through. If we only sit back and let it happen, then everybody wins. You’ll be bouncing off the walls, too.

The Boom Booms – 10:45pm
The Boom Booms are a Vancouver based six-piece rock-pop band with strong latin and reggae influences. The group was forged from friendships born on the schoolyards, soccer fields, cafe patios and eventually the bars and clubs of East Vancouver where they now regularly sell 300 tickets for their shows. The group’s magnanimous influences include the Buena Vista Social Club, Gregory Isaacs, Manu Chao, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Damian Marley, Otis Redding, Sam Cook, Ray LaMontagne and Paul Simon.

The band was launched in 2007 with the Butterfly Man album. The video for their feel-good party anthem “When the Night” made it to #6 on the Much More Music countdown in 2008, and was optioned for an episode of 90210 in 2009. “Delivered”, a surreal banjo ballad that conjures up images of a jungle river baptism, earned them the award for Best Roots Song at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards in Nashville.

Fresh off their 2nd place win in the 2011 PEAK Performance Project, BC’s most prestigious contest for emerging music groups, the Booms Booms recently wrapped a successful tour of Brazil that saw them play shows across the country including sold out shows in Rio de Janeiro and in Manaus, where they played for close to 1,000 people in the heart of the Amazon. This tour was the most successful of a number of international tours that have landed them in front of thousands at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and on national TV in Guatemala.

WATASUN – 9:30pm
Reid and Adam try to keep it fresh after six years of playing music together. The name Watasun represents community and culture. The music is described as funky, folky, beach music. Based out of Vancouver this duo creates a fusion of pop music using any genre they can to express themselves in an upbeat and positive fashion. They have become the official sound of Vancouver Tourism with their song, ‘It’s You’ as the theme song for their new marketing campaign. Watasun perform shows and events that cater to anyone looking for an upbeat and positive attitude. Being genuine and true to the organics of art seem to bring out the best in their live performances. A community is built when these two highly talented rhythmic artists hit the stage. People feel free to sing and dance to the energies that Watasun create with the crowd.
