RELIC Raises The Bar With Self Made Release – plays Kelowna, Oct. 4th at Grateful Fed

Toronto hip hop guru Relic released his album ‘Miles To Go’ last week and will be playing in Kelowna TONIGHT as he tours across Canada playing shows here and in the US. This album was entirely self made – he wrote, recorded, produced, and mixed it entirely on his own. Shad counts himself among Relic’s fan and hopefully you will too.

If being a “Triple threat” is an ace in the hole for most performers, then RELIC aka Rel McCoy is about to show the world how dangerous he really is. The Toronto based hip-hop guru can list Emcee, DJ, Producer, Engineer and Singer to his credits, all of which he showcases on his latest album Miles To Go. It’s an undertaking few can pull off, let alone take credit for, but the evidence of his ability to combine these talents with a deft touch can be heard in spades on this stunning release that combines old-school melodies and intense rhymes with breakneck speed.

A Juno Award producer listed on Shad’s winning album, RELIC is making a name for himself as the total package in Canadian hip-hop. Out on September 11th, Miles To Go is a full length he opted to (get ready for it) write, record, produce and mix entirely on his own. The result is an album where nothing sounds calculated or forced; there’s a natural attention to rhythm that allows tracks like the funk-influenced “Out of the Blue” or the inspired and courageous “Action Figure” (in which he gives props to Steve Nash) to adapt to every situation.

“What I like most about his style is that his approach to production and rapping is always true to the essence of hip hop but still inventive in subtle and surprising ways, and above that, his content is sincere and relatable.” – SHAD

This is not hip-hop with an edge just for the sake of having an edge. It’s RELIC recounting the stories of his life which brought him to where he is today. The opening 1-2 punch of “Gone Clear” and “Nobody Like You” showcase how easily his introspective lyrics can be related to by all fans of hip-hop. They’re stories for all to hear, enjoy and bring forth their own perspective.

Though RELIC did manage to create Miles To Go on his own, he wasn’t too proud to allow his friends into the studio and put their touches on the album. He invited the aforementioned Shad along with Ghettosocks in for “Down and Dirty,” Brotha Soul for “The Extra Mile” and Mr. J. Medeiros on “The Valley.” This was an important move as he sought to maintain the personal relationships he has with these artists.

Miles To Go features an honest and soulful approach where RELIC embodies the bold and vulnerable spirit of hip-hop culture.

Aidan Knight Brings “Small Reveal” To Kelowna On October 18 At The Habitat

The Victoria, BC songwriter recently signed to Outside Music for the October 23rd release of sophomore album “Small Reveal”. He is now preparing to hit the road with his band in support of his new album and they will perform in Kelowna on October 18.  Listen to the song “A Mirror” today and see the full tour dates below.

Album Cover & Media Materials

Two years can go by in the blink of an eye, or can stretch into a prolonged series of cross-country tours, weddings, funerals, rehearsals, odd jobs and getting your drivers license. Just ask Aidan Knight, the 25 year old songwriter and namesake of the Victoria-based band who unveil their second album “Small Reveal” on October 23rd

The roots of “Small Reveal” began in early 2012, in a similar rustic surrounding to that of their critically acclaimed debut album “Versicolour”: A cabin without running water on in rural British Columbia. Armed with hundreds of pounds of recording equipment; Olivier ClementsJulia WakalDavid Barry,Colin Nealis and Knight (via many wheelbarrows) set up in a gorgeous forest location with a cast iron stove and nearby swimming hole. After a week tucked away from society, armed with 15 brand new song ideas, they loaded the mountain of preamps and compressors back onto the ferry, returned home to Victoria, and spent the next 5 months quietly reworking the music.

Finally, in May of 2012, the band, joined up with producer and engineer Jonathan Anderson who was at the helm of “Versicolour”. Using the natural reverberant sounds of hanging guitars in an empty music store and the echoing distance of hallways in family homes, Knight and his collaborators created the swirling cinematics of “Small Reveal “ in a whirlwind 10 days in 10 different recording spaces. The camaraderie and the contributions of the band were integral to the process, Aidan explains; “Everything from horn arrangements to drum fills, they’re things that I could never make up on my own. They’re impossible; Only happening because of those 5 people in that certain space. I think the most powerful ideas are the ones that we never could have expected. As someone who’s worked primarily on his own up until this point, I’m so glad that my best friends are the ones I can share and learn from now”.

“Small Reveal” presents the themes of inward thought and creativity, escapism, longing for success, and belonging. The result is an exciting yet dreamy, lushly-arranged record that swells and ebbs around the captivating focal point of Aidan’s voice. “The first time I was able to listen to the songs roughly put together…discovering what we had all made together. We had created something personal but omniscient, something ragged but polished, something that was reflective of what it means to spend a year crafting something that isn’t revealed until the weeks. Unhurried. This is an album of music about creating music, the escapism in it and the uncomfortably honesty that hopefully shows itself.”

Interview with Mo Kenney, see her at Habitat on Sept. 25th

Mo Kenney will be playing in Kelowna on Tuesday, Sept. 25th at Habitat.  She is on tour with Joel Plaskett, and I asked her a few questions about her debut album, and writing songs with Joel.

Hi Mo, we are looking forward to hearing you performing in Kelowna at the Habitat on September 25th (the day your self-titled album is released). Have you performed in BC before?

Hi! I’m really looking forward to playing/seeing Kelowna! I have never performed out West or traveled out there, so I’m really looking forward to it!

So how did you end up with Joel Plaskett producing your album?

I met Joel the first time when I was 17. I was doing some demo recordings at a make-shift recording studio in Halifax, along with a few other local bands. Joel ended up coming in to listen to a few of the recordings and my name stuck with him. I got a call on my 20th birthday from his manager inviting me to Gordie Sampson’s songwriting camp in Ingonish, Cape Breton. I found out I got in because Joel had recommended me at the camp. From there Joel and I made a plan to get together and talk recording.

You co-write a few songs on your new album with Joel, how did those songs come together?

The songs that Joel and I wrote together happened in studio. I came in with random bits of songs I had, and without discussing we would naturally finish them together. Co-writing with him wasn’t something that was planned before entering the studio, it just kind of happened, and all the songs fit on the record.

There’s a lot of songs that stick in your head on this album. “Sucker” and “The Happy Song” are two that I’ve been listening to alot. What comes first for you, the music or the lyrics?

90% of the time I will have a guitar part and a melody in mind before writing lyrics to a song. I find having the music in place first really helps the words flow. The only time that hasn’t been the case is with my song Carnivore, which is the last song on the album. I began writing the lyrics first and had them sitting around until a proper guitar part came to me.

You have a cover of David Bowie’s “Five Years” on your album. Why did you choose that song?

I chose to cover David Bowie’s “Five Years” for a few reasons. I think it really fits with the rest of the songs on the record, because of the lyrics. It also has some sentimental value for me, I played that record non-stop in my first apartment. I absolutely love the song and the first time I played it I knew I had to put it on the record.

Check out Mo’s Facebook page, and listen to her album here!
