GO ‘BACK TO BLACK’ FRIDAY AT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT RECORD STORE (from our good friends at Record Store Day)
Ah, Black Friday. Even if you’re averse to the crowds and the crazy, there is a great place to go shopping on that day after (American) Thanksgiving, and it’s your friendly neighborhood record store. We think that there are terrific things, treasures even, at record stores every day and we’re just upping the ante a little bit on Black Friday with some limited edition vinyl, CDs, DVDs, box sets, and this year even a box of trading cards. Things you can ONLY get at a record store, and some things you can get FIRST at a record store. Things that are perfect to give/get this holiday season, EVEN if you’re doing that shopping for yourself.
**NOTE: Stores place their orders and do their stocking completely independently of us. Not all stores may choose to stock all titles. Also, many of these are limited and will sell out. Have a conversation with your record store—it’s always a good idea.

RCA presents Danny Michel on Nov. 2nd at Rotary Centre for the Arts
Date: Nov 2, 2012
Pre-Show: Aaron Gordon 6:30PM
Price: $30 per adult / $10 per student
Singer-songwriter Danny Michel has quite an eclectic catalogue of music to his credit. Among his eight solo albums, is a David Bowie tribute album called Loving the Alien. Other albums have names such as Tales From the Invisible Man, and Feather, Fur & Fin. Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Danny is currently in Central America recording a new album with members of the Garifuna Collective. With echoes of Garifuna, rock, funk, and Caribbean music, mashing genres together has always been exciting.
A quick bit of background: The Garifuna are an ethnic minority in Central America, whose roots are a mix of African and indigenous traditions. Michel, like many of us who listen to Garifuna music, is finding inspiration in their unique, engaging musical vocabulary. But unlike many of us, he is capable of doing something new, exciting and creative with that inspiration.
Danny is an innovator, demonstrating that creative artists in the digital age can build a rich, successful and intimate relationship with their fans. He gained publicity in 2008 for making the tracks of his hit single “Feather, Fur & Fin” available for his fans to remix and then posting their submissions on his website.
October was a flurry of Germany and Austria engagements so don’t miss your chance to see this dynamic performer in Kelowna for one night only.

Shred Kelly at Minstrel Cafe on Thursday, October 25th
Indie folk-rock band Shred Kelly from Fernie, BC bring album release tour to the Minstrel Cafe on Thursday October 25th.
Shred Kelly is a formulation of friends and foot stomping good times born in the East Kootenay’s of British Columbia. Hailing from the town of Fernie, the five piece band is best known for mixing clawhammer banjo riffs that tear the fabric of space and time with ambient synth, high voltage guitar, fierce drums, and hauntingly sweet vocal harmonies to produce a sound that has been properly coined “Stoke Folk”.
While their gritty and fun 2010 album “Goodbye July” still resonates strongly with boot slappin’ slacker anthems such as “I Hate Work” and “Ghost Inside My Head”, their newest full length album release “In the Hills” takes the mountain string band and adds a cup of electric shock, belting out stories of small town love and tragedy in the places they hail from. Having recently been awarded 2012 Artist of the Year at the Kooteney Music Awards and winning a spot on the Green Couch Sessions/CBC Radio 3 ‘Tracks on Tracks’ train adventure from Vancouver to Toronto, Shred Kelly is turning banjo doubters into sweaty indie folk rock believers on the dance floor, one town at a time.

Andy Shauf brings The Bearer of Bad News to Kelowna
Saskatchewan songwriter Andy Shauf and his band will be giving Western Canada their first taste his first full length LP since 2008, “The Bearer of Bad News” to be released November 6th. Listen to the song “You’re Out Wasting” below.

Watch album teaser videoFour years of wasting summer days away, endless winter nights waiting for cold minutes to tick by, months strung together by time spent on the roads spanning Canada and the US – these are the elements that have inspired Andy Shauf’s sophomore album, The Bearer of Bad News, which is set to be released on November 6th, 2012.
Not rushing things might be a trait taken from Andy Shauf’s prairie upbringing. Marking the time between his debut album, Darker Days (2008) and his forthcoming album was the EP Sam Jones Feeds His Demons, which he released independently in March of 2012.
It is Andy’s distinctive ability to sit with his songs and his humble appreciation of that time spent that makes him one of the most engaging emerging songwriters in Canada.
Known for both honest and raw self-reflective songs as well as captivating lyrical works of fiction, the handful of years Andy took to release this album led him to explore the themes of uncertainty, curiosity and spirituality. “I think spirituality is a huge part of life whether you are religious or not, even if you’re just superstitious. You can’t really get away from the fact that we don’t know everything.” The unsettling stories told on The Bearer of Bad News came as Andy wrote both at home and on the road. Musically, the record took shape in a modest home studio in his parents basement, where Andy spent hours writing, recording and producing each song himself. “Spending all this time allowed me a lot of freedom in the ways I arranged the songs. I could work on a drum part for a whole day, or play piano for 2 hours without figuring anything out and be okay with that.”
Building unassuming melodies from the sounds of a weathered piano, the warm resonance of the aged strings on his acoustic guitar, and of course, the clarinet; the heart of The Bearer of Bad News still resides in Andy’s clear voice and dark musical storytelling.
In the record’s final stages, Andy came together with producer and engineer; Jonathan Anderson (Aidan Knight, Jordan Klassen) to give the record it’s polished sound, while still maintaining the authentic humble approach that listeners of Andy Shauf have come to appreciate.
