Hearing Trees: Live at Fernandos, Sept. 21st
Winnipeg indie rockers Hearing Trees are set to release their sophomore EP ‘Dear Sahara’ on August 28th and to celebrate, they’re releasing the video for the first single – the frenetic, captivating track ‘Sahara.’ Watch the video here. The band will also embark on a Canadian Tour in support of the EP, starting in Brandon on September 11th and ending back in Winnipeg on October 2nd with an Album Release Show at The West End Cultural Centre. See below for a full listing of tour dates.Known for incorporating slam-style poetry into performances, Hearing Trees takes you from anxiety-laced post-punk to uplifting sing-along choruses that garner comparisons to Interpol, Matthew Good, R.E.M, and Tragically Hip. Frontman Graham Hnatiuk’s backdrop of reference-filled lyrics grasp the gritty, dry edge of modern life — from Canadian soldiers coming home from the Spanish civil war, to kayaking in the Arctic Circle, through a swath of eclectic shards of culture.Their sophomore EP, ‘Dear Sahara,’ produced by Michael P Falk (Les Jupes, Head in the Sand) is a marked evolution in maturity for the band. It is also an art project, featuring handwritten lyrics, liner notes and sketches, in singer Hnatiuk’s distinctive style. Through a theme of letter writing, ‘Dear Sahara’ explores uncertainties about relationships, paths in life, and the anxiety of youth; Hnatiuk lives with depression and following a serious episode in 2009, he left school to pursue music, art and writing.“There is life after a destructive force. Letting the earthquake swallow you is a good way to learn how to dig out,” Hnatiuk explains. The band released their debut self-titled EP in November 2014 and toured in early 2015, with great showings at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa. In their short time on the Winnipeg scene, Hearing Trees carved out a reputation for an exciting live show and have opened for prominent local bands such as Mariachi Ghost, Indicator Indicator and Sc Mira.Hearing Trees is embedded into the Winnipeg arts scene, which includes “Suite 421,” the band’s rehearsal space and custom venue, where up-and-coming artists share the walls and stage for a completely bespoke, 100% local show every few months. Singer Hnatiuk is also involved in the Winnipeg slam poetry community and was a part of the inaugural “Folk’n Word” in Winnipeg, an event pairing musicians with spoken word artists and slam poets for a night of artistic fusion at the West End Cultural Centre. He also regularly publishes poetry, musings about struggles with depression and anxiety, and the occasional non-fiction to the band’s website and tumblr.Hearing Trees’ new EP ‘Dear Sahara’ will be available online at iTunes and all other digital retailers on Friday, August 28th. Hearing Trees will be touring in support of the EP starting in Brandon on September 11th. Alberta Songsters Bluebird Bound Tour
The Kelowna Folk Club is very excited to be bringing in such an exciting show as their season opener.
John Wort Hannam and Leeroy Stagger are touring a double bill solo show in BC this fall as they make their way out to perform at Bluebird North in Vancouver. Both are touring brand new records.
Leeroy Stagger is a Canadian alternative country singer-songwriter and a Western Canadian Music Award Nominee for “Roots Solo Recording of the Year”. Raised in rural British Columbia, Stagger has garnered an international fan base through relentless touring both home and abroad. Leeroy’s songs have been placed in TV shows Grey’s Anatomy, Sons of Anarchy, Degrassi, and Heartland. Releasing ten albums in ten years Stagger is already well on his way to joining the likes of John Hiatt, Ryan Adams and John Prine as an ambassador for North American roots rock ‘n’ roll.
John Wort Hannam is a Juno Nominee and a Canadian Folk Music Award Winner who writes and sings lyrically driven acoustic roots music in a style somewhere between contemporary and traditional. One reviewer said. “John’s songs are woven textiles of metaphor, phrasing, irony, and rhyme that read with ease like well-written prose.”
Another said, “Like Tom Russell, Hannam’s narrative, achingly resilient writing approach hooks the listener immediately. The real deal.” But Sing Out! magazine really summed up John’s writing style when they wrote “Hannam makes the world personal instead of his personal life the world.”

The Bros. Landreth earned their first JUNO for their debut, Let It Lie, which won for Roots Traditional Album of the Year in the group category. The band has been on a hot streak, signing with U.S. label Slate Creek Records, winning a Canadian Folk Music Award for best new act, launching a video on CMT, and garnering accolades from international media, including a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of country artist to watch at SXSW
“Leave it to a group of Canadians to dish up some of the best Southern-style blues we wolfed down all weekend. …a quiet storm of slide guitar solos, blue notes, three-part harmonies…” Rolling Stone: 20 Best Things We Saw at Americana Music Fest 2014
Donovan Woods
http://www.donovanwoods.net/
With a voice as notable as his lyrics, Donovan Woods is a critically acclaimed and in-demand Canadian recording artist, performer and songwriter. His third record, “Don’t Get Too Grand”, featuring the hit single “Put On Cologne” garnered radio airplay around the world, and was nominated for “Roots & Traditional Album of the Year” at the 2014 Juno Awards. Splitting his time between Nashville and Toronto, Woods’ versatile songs have been recorded by everyone from Canadian indie artists to established stars like Tim McGraw or Alan Doyle (Great Big Sea), and been featured in television shows, major motion pictures and commercials. Piercingly honest and quietly anthemic, Woods sings with a striking sense of the world that produced him – the unsung towns of Canada’s industrial heartland. The result is music that’s transporting, but never loses the dry, self-deprecating humour that has endeared Woods to audiences from the start.

Two of the most talented and unique performers we know. This will be a night of magic.
