Based on the overwhelmingly positive response from the community at the well-attended inaugural event in 2013, we are busy building Marigold decorated ofrendas and piñatas décor to get ready for this second annual (19+) Sugar Skull Strut to be held throughout the beautiful Rotary Centre for the Arts on Nov 1st 2014. El Día de los Muertos or ‘Day of the Dead’ is the inspiration for Sugar Skull Strut which will have live music by MAZACOTE, a hard hitting six piece latin dance band, playing horn-driven New York salsa dura and beats from Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba, music from Major Mambo, Salsa Dance instructors, Mexican Folklore dancers, Kinshira Performance Troupe with magical fire poi and black light lounge, Costume strut and prizes and a Cash Cantina with beer, wine, sangria, margaritas and Mexican bites. (Sat) November 1, 2014 | 8:00 PM – Midnight
The most anticipated Day of the Dead party in Kelowna, Sugar Skull Strut, is a Rotary Centre for the Arts signature event. Sugar Skull Strut is inspired by El Día de los Muertos or ‘Day of the Dead’, a traditionally festive time of year in Mexico honoring past souls and loved ones.
Costumes are optional, but last year’s attendees were a wonderfully creative sight! Visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/sugarskullstrut?ref=hl or website http://www.rotarycentreforthearts.com/now_showing/events.html for an insider’s view and some great ideas. We’ll have a red carpet photographer post your festive faces to the Sugar Skull Strut facebook page for a week of voting and prizes.
Doing your own makeup? Connect with the official Sugar Skull Strut staff at Calowna Costumes who can give ideas and 10% off makeup with your Sugar Skull ticket. Guaranteed to make you move is hard-hitting Latin dance band, MAZACOTE http://www.mazacote.ca, playing horn-driven New York salsa dura with beats from Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba. Based in Vancouver, the band features Nicaraguan singer-songwriter David Lopez, latin jazz trumpeter Malcolm Aiken and a groove-heavy rhythm section featuring Chris Couto on timbales, Miguel Benavides on Congas, Aaron McKinney on bass, and pianist Niho Takase. Powerful vocals combined with driving afrocuban percussion and brassy mambos, introducing their son-inspired take on some of salsa’s hardest grooves.
