John Antoniuk – May 24th at Fernando’s Pub

John Antoniuk will be performing in Kelowna, May 24 (at Fernando’s) as part of his upcoming Canadian tour.

Antoniuk’s 2012 album Always With You was written and dedicated to his mother after she passed away. He has received attention from notable national outlets such as Exclaim! and I was hoping you might consider a concert preview/review/or short feature for one or both upcoming performances

His latest music video consists of home movies filmed during the making of his album with award winning producer Leeroy Stagger. Break My Heart Official Video

John Antoniuk, aka “smokekiller“, is a singer-songwriter from Saskatoon, SK. John’s songwriting has been compared to Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, and Wilco. “Out There” from the album “13” was selected as a National Finalist in the 2009 Radiostar Songwriting Competition. “13” was the first full length release for John with the smokekiller moniker and was mixed by Steven Drake (the Odds). John originally released two ep’s under the Smokekiller name which he compiled and re-released nationally in 2006. It was the release of the Side A ep which quickly garnered John attention as a songwriter and saw him sharing the stage with Ron Sexsmith and Hayden. In 2011 John was awarded a 10k20 grant from Rawlco Radio, and recorded an album of new material produced by Leeroy Stagger. “Always With You” will be released September 2012 and a full North American tour will follow. John has also been very busy over the last 5 years managing and performing with the Jen Lane Band.

They were named band of the month for March by Edmonton’s commercial rock station Sonic 102.9FM along with being nominated for their previous EP Illuminations for Rock Recording of The Year at the Edmonton Music Awards.

Kicking The Can is the bands eighth recording since first releasing their debut LP ‘Ezparanza’ back in 2008, and features eleven groove anthem tracks that showcases the bands fusion of self described Southern Rock from the True North / Reggae Music from a Cold Dark Place.

When Robots, Bison, and the Ogopogo all find themselves in the same video you know it must be a product of Winnipeg’s Oldfolks Home.  Ricardo Lopez-Aguilar’s new video for “Garland’s Moving to Vancouver” brings his electro-pop sensibilities on screen and marries them with the positive side of very personal stories.  “We wanted to show the conflicting feelings of starting a new life and wanting to stay where you feel comfortable,” says Lopez-Aguilar.  “And we wanted it to be fun.”

“Garland’s Moving to Vancouver”, is one of the first singles off Oldfolks Home’s upcoming album, Black & Blue, out May 7 on Head in the Sand, and available to stream right now.

Billed as the world’s first happy divorce album, Black & Blue, is both haunting and danceable.  Album tracks Sleeper and It Scares Me” reveal the intimate side of Lopez-Aguilar’s spirit lifting journey through one marriage and one divorce.

In support of Black & BlueOldfolks Home will tour North America with a wave of three-dimensional performances that will bring Lopez-Aguilar’s electronic pop missives to life from New York to Vancouver.

She is best known as being one quarter of Roots stars Po’ Girl who have toured the world many times in the last 8 years winning fans and accolades at every stop. She is also garnering much critical praise for her solo album Where the Darkness Goes. .Awna has recently embarked on her first ever solo tour and we are privileged to be included here in Kelowna. She has stops in Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah before returning to Canada.

Maiya Robbie of Long Story Short will be joining the tour as Awna’s special guest in Kelowna.
