Kelly Joe Phelps Brings “Brother Sinner and the Whale” To Kelowna On December 3rd At The Minstrel Café & Bar

The Pacific Northwest songwriter’s Steve Dawson-produced new release and 9th full length album marks his triumphant return to slide guitar on a dozen beautifully rendered acoustic gospel blues songs. “Brother Sinner and the Whale” was released by Black Hen Music on August 21 & Kelly Joe Phelps will perform at The Minstrel Café & Bar on December 3rd.

“it’s still amazing to consider how three days spent in a recording studio have allowed Phelps to redefine who he is as an artist with a solo record that builds on all of his lyrical, compositional and technical strengths to form the best album of his career. Performing Songwriter

“beautifully-executed set of 12 songs in the folk-blues tradition, with the ghost of Mississippi John Hurt smiling down on Phelps’s graceful fingerpicking and lyrical slide.”
The  Montreal Gazette

“This is affecting rural music, from the gifted acoustic guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps, who trades in his lap slide for fluid finger-picking and nimble bottle-necking as he abandons straight country-blues for spiritual concerns.” The Globe and Mail

“beautifully crafted acoustic gems.” Cashbox

Milkcrate Records in-store: Nov. 19th with the Great Bloomers

Facebook event

Welcome back to Kelowna one of the bands who helped us kickstart our acclaimed in-store live sessions way back when in April… touring in support of their terrific new album, Distant Fires.

Like the recent seven-inch “Something More,” Distant Fires was produced by Chris Stinger (Timber Timbre, Ohbijou). The album includes that single plus its B-side, “Sunday Clothes,” and the rest of the 11 songs follow the folk rock template mapped out in those songs.

The new tunes are “brooding with Leonard Cohen grit,” while others “[erupt] into Springsteen-like anthems.” The arrangements, which are heavy on guitar and organ, are said to be “simultaneously vast and dense.” There’s no title track, but there are consecutive songs called “In the Distance” and “The Fire Burns Strong.”

Look for Great Bloomers to promote Distant Fires with a Canadian tour throughout the fall and winter. Until then, stream the single “I Wanna Die Young” at Exclaim.ca
