Flatfoot 56 – Friday night at Doc’s

While on tour with The Ataris. Flatfoot 56 will be stopping by Doc Willoughby’s for their won show here in Kelowna.  It’s always great to see bands enroute from Vancouver-Calgary, stopping by our town!

Playing a positive-natured brand of hardcore-tinged Celtic punk, Flatfoot 56 has been unleashing itself upon America and the rest of the world for over 10 years now. Forming in 2000, the Chicago natives achieved nationwide attention with their first two label-backed records, 2006’s Knuckles Up and 2007’s Jungle of the Midwest Sea. These releases built on a heavy dose of previously established regional notoriety, helping the band gain steam early on.

Indie up-and-comers bring national tour to Kelowna nightclub; Oct. 17th, 2012

A pair of JUNO-nominated acts headline an indy double-bill at a well-known Kelowna hot spot now opening its doors to more live music.

Cuff the Duke and Jenn Grant bring their national tour to Kelowna’s Sapphire Nightclub on Wed., Oct. 17 for a 9 p.m. show. Both were nominated for a Juno Award in this year’s Adult Alternative Album of the Year category, a contest won by Feist and her album, Metals.

Grant released her third album, The Beautiful Wild, on Sept. 25. The East Coast nightingale says her new record “follows love’s twisted, tangled path deep into the heart’s jungle.” She teams up with Cuff the Duke fresh off a North American tour opening for Kathleen Edwards.

Cuff the Duke’s new album, Union, went on sale Oct. 2. It’s the second half of a two-part album project by the alt-country band that started with the release of Morning Comes late last year. “Morning Comes was more acoustic-based,” says the band’s Wayne Petti. “This album is more electric-based.”

The band is no stranger to the Okanagan. They drew a large crowd on their 2010 visit to Kelowna and put on a thrilling main stage show at this summer’s Roots and Blues Festival in Salmon Arm.

Sapphire owner, Arun Alleliua, says he wants to add to the club’s appeal beyond the premium nightclub it already is and into an “entertainment complex” catering to a wide variety of tastes.

“I want it to be a dance club that can also be a home for live music. I think we can have the best of both worlds,” he says.

Sapphire is a great place to see music, says the show’s promoter, Karma Lacoff. “When we used the space for BreakOut West,” she says, referring to the music festival that took over the nightlife in downtown Kelowna as part of the 2010 Western Canadian Music Awards, “both the audiences and the bands loved it. It’s got a great stage. It has great sight lines. Obviously it has a great dance floor, and it just sounds fabulous in there.”

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door and are available at TicketZone.com, Mosaic Books (uptown: Willow Park Shopping Centre, #1, 590 HWY 33 W and downtown: 411 Bernard Avenue), Milkcrate Records (1551 Ellis St)  and Leo’s Video (2680 Pandosy St).

Sapphire is located at 238 Leon Ave, Kelowna, BC.

Album Artwork, Photos & Details:

No Can Do” is the group’s third studio album. It’s also their most assertive and soul stirring yet, available on CD/LP/Digital via Triple Crown (home to fine recordings by Destroyer along with Ladyhawk-affiliated SPORTS and Duffy & The Doubters). Featuring 10 Duffy Driediger (lead vocals, guitar) penned songs performed in the telekinetic way only Darcy Hancock (lead guitar, vocals), Sean Hawryluk (bass, vocals), and Ryan Peters(drums, vocals) can, “No Can Do” (*no relation to Hall & Oates, Chromeo or Kiwi chanteuse Ladyhawke while we’re at it) rips hard and harder. Recorded at The HIVE Creative Labs with Colin Stewart (+ electro-acoustic help from Black Mountain/Lightning Dust’s Joshua Wells), mastered by audio guru Jeff Lipton (Bon Iver, Destroyer-Kaputt, Numero Group) with the good people at Chicago Mastering Service handling the crucial vinyl lacquer cut, the results are rebel rousing to say the least.

Having watched Ladyhawk evolve from “The Dugout” (“Ladyhawk”, 2006), “War” (“Fight For Anarchy” EP, 2007), and “You Ran” (“Shots”, 2008) to its current perch as grizzled (but always lovable) veterans of the Canadian music landscape, I can guarantee that this album will fuck you up something good. Don’t believe me??? Try it for yourself any way you see fit. Stand and be counted at one of their upcoming live shows, listen to “No Can Do” outside (*equally effective in mother nature as accompaniment for your daily street beat rituals) or even as a soundtrack to your next house party. Whatever shape your support takes, don’t forget to dance (even if you end up flat on your ass in a beer-soaked Horseshoe Tavern or deep in a puddle at a soggy interior B.C. baseball diamond)!!! Blessed with the ability to lift us high and higher, never loose faith. Ladyhawk will take care of the rest.

BIO
In the words of Bruce Springsteen, “Nothing feels better than blood on blood”. Brothers and front-
men Brian and Bob Sumner share a bond that requires no flattery – a family pact that keeps their music honest and authentic. Their upcoming release I’ll Be There Tomorrow holds true to what their devoted fans know and love; the raw grit of steel string guitar and banjo, the lonesome hum of a harmonica, Bob’s haunting tenor croon, the devastatingly low baritone of brother Brian. Holed up in a log cabin in the mountains of Merritt, B.C. The Sumner Brothers created a true alt-country gem. Their three previous albums have all met with critical acclaim; In The Garage charted in the top 10 for Folk/Roots/Blues on Canadian College Radio; Sumner Brothers – Self Titled placed in The Province Newspaper’s 2008 top ten list, Herohill.com’s top 20 and You Crazy Dreamers’ favorites for 2009 and In The Garage 2 – You’re Last Chance was featured in Slowcoustic’s top Canadian records of 2010 and received 4.5 stars from Americanrootsuk.com.
