“It’s one of those rare albums where you have to listen to it all in one sitting. Like a good book that’s hard to put down, this ‘Sleeping With A Stranger’ tickles the ears and within three bars you’re completely hooked.” – Americana UK
Christina Martin‘s music achieves an effortless union between alt-country and rock with pop-sensibility. This award-winning artist has been attracting roots/rock listeners across North America and Europe for nearly a decade. She has released five albums on her independent Canadian label Come Undone Records. Having opened for Wilco while living in Austin TX, she returned to the Canadian East Coast to dig her heels into the music business and formed an independent music label to manage her relentless touring and recording schedule.
Sleeping With A Stranger features tweleve original songs and Martin coming of age both lyrically and musically. In 2012, Christina also completed an artist in residency with Geriatric Medicine Research (GMR) at Dalhousie University and The Canadian Dementia Knowledge Translation Network (CDKTN). She recently returned home to East Coast Canada after touring her acclaimed album with husband/producer Dale Murray in Canada Germany and Netherlands.
“This is a singer-songwriter who observes, feels, does not judge, and relays what she finds – “not good at keeping secrets,” she even admits. With a voice high, strong and bittersweet, the affecting Nova Scotian sings of search, vulnerability and the concept of home.”

Maria in the Shower is a uniquely entertaining band at the leading edge of Canada’s new folk sound. Their musical approach is a simple but potent alchemy, marrying traditional folk and jazz with a delivery that’s pure fun and energy.  There is a Kelowna connection as band member, drummer Todd Bifford, hails from here. He is joined by, trumpeter/accordionist Jack Garton, guitarist Martin Reisle, and bassist Brendan Hartley.

Some of their press accolades are as follows:  “Wildly entertaining!”  – Calgary Sun, “Part Vaudeville, part cabaret, part punk and part folk, Maria in the Shower is all that and more.”Winnipeg Free Press.

And the name? It came about when the then-nameless band, that performed its songs in ancient Hebrew and Greek, needed a moniker for a show. A painter friend had written the words Maria in the Shower on a painting and a story in the Weekly World News talked about an apparition of the Virgin Mary in her shower, so it just seemed like the right name at the right time.

See this Spontaneous, raucous, swinging band at the East Kelowna Hall on March 22.

Hidden Towers – March 7th at Fernandos

Formed in Vancouver in 2009, Hidden Towers has been a maturing idea for close to a decade between best friends Chris Cantrell and Ben Holland. Dabbled with off and on in between more active projects and careers, the band had never been given the full chance to be until now. 2013 marks the most defined and static incarnation of the group, with a full-length album on the horizon.

In 2009, Hidden Towers won CITR radio’s Shindig competition; making them the first heavy band to win the competition since Three Inches Of Blood in 2001. From their prizes came Hidden Towers’ first EP – Great Conjunctions – and showcases for the band at NXNE in 2010. Following a modicum of national attention, Hidden Towers was put on hiatus due to incessant line-up changes and careers.

Cantrell (guitars/vocals) and Holland (bass) have enlisted the powerful and articulate drumming of Jakub Svoboda to create music that takes largely from bigger than life classic metal, 70′s jazz fusion, space rock and post-hardcore – turning their stripped down lineup into an evolved spectrum of sound.

Olympus Mons – recorded by Jesse Karr at Rain City Recorders – will be the first full-length release by Hidden Towers: “a band that deserves your applause, respect and, most of all, your undivided attention” – Scott Lyon, Discorder Magazine.
