Woody Holler and His Orchestra Date: Oct 10, 2013 7:30PM Pre-Show: Dirt Road Opera 6:30PM
Price: Advance $25 per adult / $30 Door (5PM day of event) Facebook Event
Woody grew up hearing the songs of the cowboy. Although he was later trained in opera, a sense of belonging and nostalgia held him close to the early Western genre. Influenced by the crooning styles of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as the rustic blue yodeling of Jimmy Rodgers and danceable swing of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, he developed his lyric yodel on the wide-open spaces of the Canadian Prairie.
Woody Holler brings to Kelowna his western swing orchestra with Winnipeg’s finest folk/jazz musicians creating a style that Woody defines as “jazz from the saddle”. Richard Moody on violin, Greg Lowe on guitar and Daniel Koulack on double bass add clever arrangements that are rich with virtuosity and style. The repertoire is eclectic, fun and fascinating, featuring finger-snapping swing beats, honey-slowed love croons, and show stopping “extreme” yodeling.
His debut album Western Skies was nominated for the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards under the category of “traditional vocalist of the year”. Woody Holler hits the road with his yodeling western swing orchestra in their “John Deere green” bus heading our way – come and appreciate the edgy style, classical knowledge and musical diversity of this talented band.
Tickets $25 Advance/$30 Door. Available through SelectYourTickets.com or by calling 250-717-5304.
Though the name Dirt Road Opera does not conjure up visions of honey-smooth four-part harmonies, jaw dropping lead vocals, and amazing musicianship that’s exactly what roots/country/folk fans can anticipate when this five-piece band hits the stage. Led by lead singers Barry Mathers and Rachel Matkin, and supported by well known lead guitarist Gary Smyth, drummer Jay Swetlishoff and Chris Stanford on bass, Dirt Road Opera is an outstanding band that plays both superb original tunes and cover songs of well known artists such as John Prine, Fred Eaglesmith, and Lucinda Williams. This is a ‘must see’ show that features four members from the former kings of Canadian roots music – The Cruzeros.
John Antoniuk (aka Smokekiller) – a Saskatoon Singer/ Songwriter whose origins fall into the indie rock scene which has evolved into smartly written indie pop via a folksy roots rock vibe, with each album portraying a unique side to Johns talented songwriting. (falls somewhere between Pete Yorn, Bruce Cockburn, Ryan Adams, maybe even a little Kris Kristofferson). He performs with a band, andsolo. John is touring behind his new release Always With You with opening act and back up band the Young Benjamins.
