Dan Mangan Introduces Madic Records, Leads With Astral Swans

Dan Mangan Introduces Madic Records, Leads With Astral Swans

Award winning Vancouver musician launches record label, signs Calgary’s Astral Swans for inaugural release

“You Carry A Sickness/Park Street” 7 inch & digital release out March 25
Astral Swans on tour with Jay Malinowski & The Deadcoast
 commencing March 20

Two time JUNO Award winning west coast musician Dan Mangan, in partnership with renowned Canadian independent record label Arts & Crafts, is pleased to announce the formation of Madic Records.

“I’d had this longstanding pipe dream of having a boutique label. For years, it seemed a fulfilling hobby; to help spread the word about music I believed in that wasn’t getting enough attention. It was never quite the right time, and I figured if it ever were to be, that it would happen fairly organically, and because a particular album or project fell in my hands. It took about one listen through Astral Swans’ rough mixes to light a proverbial fire.”

From the unfiltered inner monologue of Calgary’s Matthew Swann, Astral Swans is the sound of time spent next to the radiator in a cold apartment. Swann’s observations are stark and personal, bringing to mind images of the American underground’s various eras. Equally inspired by 60′s folk, no wave, and 90′s sludge, Astral Swans is at once: haunting, sincere, psychedelic, and strange – picture Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Syd Barrett, and Sibyelle Baier, interpreted via Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Eric’s Trip, and Chad Vangaalen (who produced Swann’s previous project, Extra Happy Ghost!!!) He lacks the usual pretense of the “singer/songwriter” and one gets the feeling that his cleverness is almost accidental; it’s just what happened.

Astral Swans debut LP will be released on Madic Records in 2014. In the meantime the newly minted label offers up an introductory two song 7 inch vinyl and digital release ahead of Astral Swans spring tour dates with Jay Malinowski& The Deadcoast. All tour dates are listed below.

THE PACK A.D. BRINGS NEW ALBUM TO KELOWNA ON FEBRUARY 27 AT THE HABITAT

THE PACK A.D. BRINGS NEW ALBUM TO KELOWNA ON FEBRUARY 27 AT THE HABITAT

VANCOUVER DUO CELEBRATES WEEK OF RELEASE NUMBERS FOR DO NOT ENGAGE
NEW ALBUM DEBUTS IN TOP 20 ALTERNATIVE ALBUMS CHART

Released January 28 on Nettwerk Records, The Pack A.D.’s Do Not Engage has debuted at a career best #87 in the top 200, hitting # 16 on the Alternative Albums chart and #54 on the digital albums chart. Meanwhile current single “Big Shot” is # 51 on the Mediabase Canada Alternative Rock Spins Chart. To celebrate, the band has hit the road on an extensive North American tour that will see the them visit both Canadian coasts and almost everywhere in between. They perform in Kelowna on February 27 at The Habitat.

“This is the record where the band squares its shoulders and definitively forges beyond its howling, primitivist, dirt-blooze beginnings into eerie psych, stalking stoner-rock, and “woo-ooh-woo”-ing power-pop rampages” Toronto Star

Miller’s drumming still expertly threads the needle between tribal and tasteful, and Black still destroys her guitar like nobody’s business. … at the top of their game, and their timing couldn’t be better.” Exclaim!

“Maya Miller’s determined drumming and Becky Black’s fierce guitar playing and rich, at times ethereal, vocals combine for an explosive, exciting – and even accessible – release.” The Globe and Mail

“Don’t let the title fool you. Vancouver’s beloved female garage-punk duo have made their most engaging CD yet, thanks to a hefty infusion of melodies, choruses and danceable grooves.” Sun Media
