NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES BEGIN THIS WEEK

Winnipeg’s Royal Canoe release their interpretation of Beck’s Song Reader via Bandcamp and iTunes. Fall tour dates across North America with Close Talker, The Elwins, and Rubblebucket begin September 20.

WATCH “WE ALL WEAR CLOAKS” LIVE AT THE PANTAGES THEATRE

A few years ago Beck released a collection of unrecorded, sheet-music only, songs called The Song Reader with the intention of have other artists perform his written music. And with Beck’s own release of the recorded album, Winnipeg’s Royal Canoe felt it was high-time they officially released their own interpretations of the project.

Recorded last winter at Pantages Theatre as a part of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s New Music Festival and Pop Nuit, Royal Canoe prepared and performed 10 selections from The Song Reader. Live footage of the band’s performance has already received attention online, including a personal shout out from Beck himself, however the recordings never got a proper release.

Four tracks recorded live at Pantages Theatre have found their way on to Royal Canoe Does Beck’s Song Reader along with three more recorded in studio, specifically for the release. “It was a new challenge, working and producing songs that were written by someone else, and with no guiding, definitive version on which to base our production and delivery,” says Matt Peters. “The clean slate was a liberating place to start.”

The mini-album is available to purchase today via Bandcamp and iTunes. Royal Canoe’s latest album, Today We’re Believers, was nominated for a 2014 Juno Award for Alternative Album Of The Year. This week the band will embark on a two month long North American tour, making stops with Close Talker, The Elwins, and Rubblebucket.

The Weather Station Releases Limited Edition EP …Announces Western Canadian Tour Dates With Bahamas

The Weather Station is releasing the limited edition EP What Am I Going To Do With Everything I Know on October 14th via You’ve Changed Records. A six song 45 RPM 12″, the release coincides with a tour of the US and Western Canada opening for Bahamas (dates listed below).

Recorded with All Of It Was Mine (YC-011) producer Daniel Romano in Welland, ON and in North Carolina with members of the band Megafaun, the sound of What Am I Going To Do With Everything I Know (YC-019) is deep and rich, quiet but soulful, and startlingly intimate. Each side of the record is a trio of interconnected songs. Side A is a meditation on knowledge. Side B is a narrative, a love story in three parts. States of mind and domestic situation are described with equal and incisive fidelity.

Since the release of All Of It Was Mine in 2011, The Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman has been touring as handpicked opener for Bahamas, Basia Bulat, Bruce Peninsula, among others.  She has also been in demand as collaborator, appearing on new records by Doug Paisley (Warner), Field Report (Partisan), Wayne Petti (Paper Bag), Siskiyou (Constellation), and Daniel Romano (New West). Her work has been covered by Pitchfork, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and many more, and has been played on CBC, BBC, NPR, and college radio.  The Duets Series, an ongoing project of digital singles co-written by Tamara with other songwriters, was nominated for the 2013 SOCAN songwriting prize.

In addition to What Am I Going To Do With Everything I Know, a new full-length album from The Weather Station has been recorded in collaboration with Afie Jurvanen(Bahamas) and Robbie Lackritz (Feist).  Titled Loyalty, the LP will be released in 2015.
