The Crooked Brothers’ new album, Thank You I’m Sorry, is folk music full of left turns. No strangers to wide open spaces, the brothers captured their album in both Winnipeg’s Private Ear Studio, a downtown warehouse recording studio, and a handmade log home in the country. The resulting sound closely reflects their live dynamics. Practically a Crooked Family Variety Act their concerts see banjos, mandolins, guitars, and more taking turns being juggled from brother to brother. Matt Foster’s unforgettably strange voice, inhuman and gravelly deep. Baker’s deft handling of the harmonica. Jesse Matas’ stories and poems turned lyrics. Each having their own style and touch, the arrangements seem limitless, and there’s a refreshing sense that they will never write the same song twice.

Having performed to sold-out rooms at festivals such as Brighton’s Great Escape, and Switzerland’s Spring Bluegrass Festival Willisau, The Crooked Brother’s will take their banjos, beards, and harmonies on tour across Canada beginning in October. Their latest album, Thank You I’m Sorry, came out September 23.

Royal Tusk open for the Smalls, Nov. 5th at Flashbacks

Wednesday night, November 5th, after opening for Big Wreck across Canada, Royal Tusk will be in Kelowna performing at Flashbacks in support of punk rockers The Smalls.

Tickets at the door.

Royal Tusk is the name of their beast — a shaggy, tenacious force with hints of Americana, soul, and a whole lotta heart. Their first six-song EP, Mountain, is out on Hidden Pony Records. You could say the title refers to the pair’s immovable friendship, but it’s also a cheeky nod to their persistence as musicians — not even a mountain can deter Royal Tusk.

“We’ve been pushing a cart uphill for years,” Carriere chuckles. “We just don’t know how to stop,” MacKinnon admits.

You might recognize the two from Ten Second Epic, one of Edmonton’s most beloved rock bands. After 12 years, three albums and two Juno nominations, TSE is winding down, but Carriere and MacKinnon still want to make music together.

“With the experience of Ten Second Epic, we learned how to do it right, so we know which tunes to put forward …,” says Carriere. “… And not to be so sensitive if something isn’t as good as something else,” adds MacKinnon, who sports a tattoo of a bass-playing mammoth on is right arm. “Not to mention having spent the last 12 years in a van.”

Keloha will not be returning in 2015

It’s very sad to see that Keloha will not be returning in 2015.  Kelly, Scott and the whole Wet Ape team built something really special.  I’ve been in Kelowna for 15 years and I’ve seen festivals come and go.  Keloha Music & Arts Festival was unique, had a great vibe, a lot of energy and some amazing artists over the three years.  I look forward to all the other Wet Ape events in the future!  The Canadian and International indie-rock/pop/hip-hop artists that played the Island Stage and Beach Stage over the 3 years was very impressive!
