Four bands at the Habitat – Nov 24th

Born in a bedroom, impatient with the lack of patience in late nineties indie rock, Raising the Fawn was started in 1997 as a one-man show. When you write and play everything yourself, questions are both easily asked and answered. Everything that I originally sought for the music — minimal arrangements, gentle playing, gradual pacing, a reaction against the flailing, manic nature of indie rock — was practically dictated to me by the setup of a guy and his four-track. “(Raising The Fawn) is diffcult to categorize, alternately bouncy and falsetto-filled or trippy, instrumental drone-rock, often dark and always intriguing” – Popmatters.com

The hard work is apparent from the first note. Drummer Glen Nicholson’s forceful, steady pulse builds a sturdy foundation. Bassist Brad Goodsell supports the low end with thoughtful minimalism. Daniel Ledwell’s explorative piano passages tickle the ear, while John Mullane tops the proceedings with honey-like guitars and his richly textured voice. Add some sonic surprises to the mix – glockenspiels, grand pianos, fifteen-piece choirs, and sounds that they don’t even know the name of – and you have a disc that builds on the In-Flight Safety’s signature sound. It doesn’t hurt that the band has spent the last year performing alongside some of Canada’s best independent artists. In-Flight Safety has toured with Stars, and appeared alongside Broken Social Scene, Metric, The Constantines, Hawksley Workman, Joel Plaskett, and Matt Mays and are fast becoming one of Atlantic Canada’s top draws.

The difficulty in pigeon-holing the band means that they are often branded with the misleading “emo” label – something they are less than comfortable with. The key here is melody – each song laden with hooks and burning with energy, yet still managing to maintain an underlying melancholia throughout. Although “the personal is political” label applies here, vocalist and key songwriter Johnny Stewart is also not afraid to cut the shit and say exactly what’s on his mind. The last couple of years has seen MICO garnering critical acclaim while criss-crossing Canada and the United States. They’ve shared the stage with bands such as The Weakerthans, Strike Anywhere, Propagandhi, Samiam, Moneen, Hot Hot Heat, the New Pornographers and Onelinedrawing.
