the SUMNER BROTHERS BAND July 31st at Doc’s
DIRECT FROM VANCOUVER
the SUMNER BROTHERS BAND
The Sumner Brothers are an uproarious country roots act from Vancouver, BC. In the past two years, Brothers Bob and Brian along with Vancouver greats, Dirty Mike Ardagh(drums) and Crazy James Meger(Bass), have burned up nearly every room and concert hall in British Columbia, creating a legion of fans and a reputation that exceeds their native province. The band will be performing at Doc Willoughby’s Tuesday July 31st. Their original songs have them being lauded as being ‘in the upper echelon of Vancouver songwriters.’ Their show mixes brotherly charm, amazing home-grown gospel/roots/alt-country/folk songs, and a delivery that calls to mind a young Elvis and Cash.
‘The band deals in the deeply spiritual side of music while expressing no interest in any particular religion. Their songs seem to explore the themes and topics that are both nearest and dearest to our own hearts but also the ones we speak about the least.’ – Songs Illinois Roots Blog
‘Our new favourite Vancouver band!’ – The Be Good Tanyas
‘I can not help but note the coincidence in the passing of the late great Johnny Cash and the arrival on the scene of The Sumner Brothers, call it what you will, I call it providence.’ – Phillips Saylor Wisor (The Shiftless Rounders)

Tonight at Doc’s – July 21st
Tonight at Doc Willoughby’s
Back by very popular demand THE PACK – these two girls rocked us back a couple of months ago and I have been asked ever since when are the pack coming back? The answer is tonight!! The Pack is a duo. But do not expect a stripped down drum and guitar outfit. The Pack is two women. But do not expect “girly” music. The Pack blends traditional blues and rock, with the focus on rhythm guitar, solid drum lines and singing straight from the gut.
“Holding the torch high in today’s garage rock revival, Vancouver duo The Pack strike with a raw, hell-torn, blues-rock swagger that is equally contemplative and unflinching”…Marty Rollins, The Approach
Bringing with them The AMAZING—- Hey Ocean!
The beautiful melodies, rich harmonies and clever lyrics of singer/songwriter David Beckingham and songstress Ashleigh Ball are both whimsical and thought provoking. The duo, who have had a long-standing musical relationship are joined and expertly supported by the wildly energetic David Vertesi on bass and the creative powerhouse Benny Schuetze on drums.
This young foursome takes inspiration from every corner of pop music – combining folk, reggae, funk and jazz into a sound that is uniquely their own. Hey Ocean!’s music also borrows from several world music genres; largely because of Beckingham’s three years in Kenya as well as other members’ travels in Central America, Asia and Europe. Passionate voices, pensive words and contagious fun keep this music honest and pure; from the heart, for the soul.

Skavenjah @ Doc Willoughby’s, Monday July 16th
http://www.myspace.com/skavenjahmusic
During their 15 years together, many bands have come and gone, but with the release of their new album – El Ritmo de la Vida – Skavenjah remains one of the constants in the world of SKA music. Skavenjah has worked very hard to become one of North Americas premiere SKA and Reggae bands, and the strong songwriting on their new album, together with their incredible live show is proof of that. From their home base on the Canadian prairies the band tours relentlessly, continually expanding on its already dedicated worldwide following as they consistently sell out shows with their trademark mix of SKA, Reggae and Dub music. In addition to over 20 International compilation appearances, Skavenjah has released 5 full-length albums: Put Some Skank In Your Tank (1993), All Dressed Up (1996), Little Monsters (1999), Light It Up (2003) and El Ritmo de la Vida (2006).
