Steve Strongman – Nov 19th at Doc Willoughby's

As a teenager, Steve Strongman would sneak up the fire escape at Kitchener’s renowned blues club Pop the Gator to listen to the music that moved his soul. It was here, sitting in with many of them, that the young guitar protégé cut his teeth on the music that would become the keystone of everything to follow.

Beginning his professional career at the age of 16, playing clubs all around southern Ontario, it wasn’t long until Strongman caught the eye of Mississippi Blues legend Mel Brown. Under his tutelage, Steve met and played with many of the Blues legends of the time. In fact, it was after one blistering opening set that Chicago soulster Otis Clay exclaimed, “I’m gonna do what you do…”

David P. Smith @ Sun Peaks

Armed with a used suit, an accordion, and penchant for twisted lyricism, Victoria BC’s worst kept David P. Smith, is embarking on a rare tour of western Canada. He may not be a national household name, but in his hometown or anywhere else in striking distance, David P. Smith’s song-writing prowess and emotionally charged live performances have garnered an almost cult-like status amongst his fans and fellow musicians.

“You may not make it, but you have to try. Otherwise, what are we doing here? And isn’t this, in fact, the most common thread uniting country, hillbilly, blues, or devotional musics, for example? The resignation to, and the quest for joy in Struggle?”
