I was late getting this show posted. The show was last night at The House (240 Lougheed Rd, Kelowna), but I thought I would post the links anyway, to help support these local Kelowna artists. Check them out next time they are playing around Kelowna.
The Kelowna Folk Club presents Don Ross in concert this Friday, May 1 at the Okanagan Mission Community Hall, 4409 Lakeshore Road, Kelowna. Doors open at 7:00PM concert starts at 8.
Tickets are $20 and available from Bering Music, 1294 Ellis Street; Tickle Trunk, 106-1835 Dilworth Drive; Beadiful Arts, 510 West Avenue; and Rosie’s Grape Stop, 325A Gray Road.
Don Ross is one of the most respected musicians in Canada and one of the top guitarists in the world. He has twice won the prestigious U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship. That competition cannot be won only with immaculate technique; the player’s music must also display a high degree of emotion and intensity.
Don Ross does all that in a musical style that borrows from jazz, folk, rock and classical music creating what he describes as “heavy wood”.
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 Tickets are available at Leo’s Videos on Pandosy or at Habitat

EYE WEEKLY TORONTO REVIEW! BY ADAM RADWANSKI April 01, 2009 21:04 EDITORIAL RATING: ***** – Five Stars
If you’ve seen Joel Plaskett live, you know he’s one of the very few musicians who could get away with releasing a triple album. The furthest thing from an ego trip, listening to Three is like inviting the unfailingly earnest Plaskett, along with his guitarist father and a pair of female backup singers, into your living room to provide an evening’s entertainment. What you get in return is an unapologetically but never self-consciously Canadian reflection on life as a travelling musician, gliding seamlessly from rambling road tunes on the first disc, to achingly homesick ballads on the second, to a perfect marriage of both sensibilities as he returns to Nova Scotia on the third.
The name of the film is “Lovers in a Dangerous Time”. It was shot on location in Creston, B.C. The film was co-written/directed/produced by Creston native Mark Hug and May Charters of Toronto. Trailer
The film has been gaining ground on the festival circuit. It had it’s US Premiere alongside top indies at The Method Film Festival in LA were it won the Maverick Award for Best Feature with a budget under a million dollars.
The title might sound familiar to you as it is also the title of the classic Bruce Cockburn song of the 80’s (and Barenaked Ladies in the early 90’s). Now the 21st century version is featured in this film and is covered by JBM (aka Jesse Marchant). Montreal based JBM actually scored the film and the soundtrack has 8 new tracks of his. The film’s soundtrack also feature’s songs by Beat Happening, Natalie Germann (BC singer/songwriter), and a classic duet from Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

The diversity that is Paul Filek extends itself far beyond his Canadian Idol debut. Never to miss an opportunity to play his music live, this hardworking and passionate 26 year-old musician has proven himself as more than just another pretty face with fantastic hair products.
Kelowna’s Brandon Wolfe Scott is a source of beauty. Just so we understand, thats beauty in the form of music. The music is the focus here, as it should be. Scotts incredible, sparse but lavish folk compositions create a landscape in the mind, one whose structures are emotional and alive.
This was my first Leonard Cohen concert and I’ve been listening to his music for almost 20 years. For the 9,000 people that sold out GM Place last night in Vancouver it was a concert to remember. At 3 1/2 hours long with only a 25 minute intermission, it was one of the longest shows I’ve been to. The 74 year-old legend RAN out on stage at 8pm and began “Dance Me to the End of Love” on his knees, serenading his brilliant guitar player. He danced, He swooned, he smiled (alot), and he was in great voice throughout the whole evening. I’ve never been to a show before where the audience were hanging on to every syllable. He made the GM Place hockey stadium (fresh from the Canucks victory 2 nights before) feel like a 500 seat theatre.
The brilliant backing band deserve to be mentioned here.
