30 Years ago today….

from Rolling Stone:

We’re spending a lot of time celebrating Rolling Stone’s Number One album of the 2000s — Radiohead’s Kid A — this month. So consider this a pause to pay tribute to our Number One album of the Eighties … an album so good, it actually came out in 1979. December 14, 1979 to be exact: today is the 30-year anniversary of the Clash’s London Calling. (To be fair, it didn’t hit the states until January 1980). For a mega-flashback, check out the full list here:
The 100 Best Albums of the Eighties
London Calling was “an emergency broadcast from rock’s Last Angry Band, serving notice that Armageddon was nigh, Western society was rotten at the core, and Rock & Roll needed a good boot in the rear,” RS wrote at the end of the 1980s. In our 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, we call the LP — which ranked Number Eight — “19 songs of apocalypse fueled by an unbending faith in rock & roll to beat back the darkness.”

Happy 60th – Tom Waits

Here’s some of the best clips available out there.  Unfortunately there are no official concert DVD releases (no “Big Time”) and none of his brilliant appearances on Letterman over the last 25 years have been compiled on a DVD.  So here’s my picks…..

1:00PM: MAKING FRIENDS WITH THE MEDIA WITH GRANT LAWRENCE

In 2009, the media surrounds us at every turn. All of those mediums are at your disposal to publicize and promote your music should you use the media to the correct advantage. In this very informative and positive seminar, Grant Lawrence, a long time musician and CBC Radio 3 music journalist, will share the secrets of making friends with the media, writing a great press release, giving the best interview, and how to use all the latest social networking tools that maximize publicity possibilities. Remember that a great relationship with the media is just as important as a great relationship with the fans.

2:30: BREAK (snacks & drinks provided)

2:45: GET IN THE VAN – TOURING SEMINAR WITH ROB WRIGHT
Moderated by Grant Lawrence

Are you ready for bad food, uncomfortable beds, too little sleep, and payment in beer? Rob Wright discusses the who, what, why, where, when and how of touring for musicians. This in-depth session delivers practical and effective information on routing, budgeting, logistics, and what life looks like from the road. Rob Wright will give the perspective on how to put together your own tour from the grassroots level and what to watch for as the audiences grow.

ROB WRIGHT, AGENT – SL FELDMAN & ASSOCIATES
Through his work promoting concerts in Edmonton over the past 10 years, Rob has become well acquainted with the inner workings of Canada’s music industry. Rob has produced over 500 concert events in Edmonton. He held the position of Talent Buyer for New City Likwid Lounge & Suburbs for 5 years, two of Edmonton’s premier club showcase venues. He’s also simultaneously held the positions of Media
Promotions / A&R Representative for Stony Plain Records.

Rob also has experience touring across Canada and performing in underground rock acts. This has given Rob a unique perspective on the industry, both as an artist and an industry professional. The knowledge accrued between acting as de facto band manager and booking agent, at the same time working as Promoter for New City, has allowed him to successfully manage artists, book tours, properly negotiate deals and pitch artists to trendsetters throughout the music industry.

GRANT LAWRENCE, HOST – CBC RADIO 3
For years, the gregarious and encyclopedic Lawrence has hosted the CBC Radio 3 Podcast, a weekly showcase of Canadian independent music. Grant also hosts a live and interactive daily program on CBC Radio 3’s popular web radio station, also airing on Sirius 86. music events, such as the Polaris Music Prize Gala, and various festivals around North America. Prior to his work at CBC, Grant Lawrence was the lead singer of the internationally acclaimed Vancouver garage band The Smugglers.
