Artist Spotlight: Aspen Switzer

You can catch Aspen Switzer in Kelowna on September 11th as part of the Lillith Fair Almost Theatre event at the Kelowna Community Theatre.  Winner of 2009 BC Interior Music Awards for Roots/World Recording of the Year & Best Folk/Traditional Recording of the Year, I asked her a few questions about the upcoming BreakOut West festival.

Did you apply to the BreakOut West festival in Kelowna?

Yes

What new oppurtunities do you think this may have for your band?

BreakOut West provides a significant opportunity to reach new audience members, broaden market appeal and present my music to national and international industry representatives.  One of my goals in 2011 is to focus on strengthening my market presence in western Canada and this event is also very well attended by presenters from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and of course the host province BC.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the music scene in the BC Interior in the last few years?

Hard to say.  I have found the recent awards for my latest album, ‘humble but bearing no apology’  to open up doors to me to venues in the interior.  Also the touring I have been doing since the release of the Album (Nov 2008), playing at Salmon Arm’s Root’s and Blues Festival and other great events have all helped introduce my music to new markets. It seems the music scene in the BC Interior is constantly evolving, not unlike my career.

Have you noticed if more venues are opening their doors for local artists to play shows around Kelowna or Nelson?

Hmmm. . . Nelson has had a few changes.  The Royal is working really hard to create a great space for live music since it’s change in ownership last November.  They are a great place for Nelsonites, interior bands and bands from afar.  Even the Spirit Bar, which has been mostly DJ’s in the past, is hosting more and more live bands. There is an old church called, “The Blue Church” that is now a home and has opened it’s doors to a few very successful house concerts.  It seems like there are a lot of places really trying to fill the venue need for Nelson.  It is still kinda a hard place for up and comers from out of town as there is so much going on all the time it can be tough to attract a crowd if you don’t have pretty decent name recognition.

As for Kelowna, I love the opportunities to play at the Community Theater and Kelowna Music fest and am always looking for new venues and events.

Mini BreakOut West: Instrument Petting Zoo

Mini BreakOut West is so excited to announce that WENTWORTH MUSIC will be sponsoring the Instrument Petting Zoo!

Wentworth Music Kelowna
So what is an instrument petting zoo anyway?  It is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with some really cool instruments, including guitars, drums, keyboards and others.  The Wentworth Instrument Petting Zoo will have all this and more, plus music teachers from their school on hand to show the kids some basic moves for the different instruments.  We will even have an area for the littler kids to experiment with pre-school friendly instruments.

We are also pleased to announce the Wentworth Music Secondary Stage, where between sets from our main stage performers, students from Wentworth’s elite bands will perform.  What would a kids festival be without some kids making music!  There is incredible talent in our beautiful city, and this will be your chance to see some of Kelowna’s rising stars!

Don’t forget you can pre-register for this free event to reserve your spot at:

Interview with Kelowna’s Cynthia Leigh-Ann

On Saturday, Kelowna’s Cynthia Leigh-Ann held her CD Release Party at the Habitat.  Here’s a follow up interview:

So you have a new CD out, what new oppurtunities are you hoping this will bring you?

Yes I do, and I am totally ecstatic about it, I had an awesome time producing my album with Producer Bob Gabelhouse he was incredible and the sound is tracks are better than I expected. We will send the full radio package to Joe Wood of RDR Music Group to submit to radio via a 16-bit wave file. as well we will have a tracker take care of the stations delivery of my music, pretty high tech stuff.

I am hoping that my CD charts, that would be incredible and get me really noticed by agents and labels; I am also sending certain songs to Tease, they put them on their site and send them out to TV, Movies, Artists, and other promoters that are looking for other uses like commercials, or other media venues looking for a good song that fits their needs. The Biggest benefit will be helping me to become a familiar face in the music industry, as well as put my music front and center, including sales, because marketing is a big part of the music business.

With your CD release party tonight at the Habitat, what can fans expect?  Are you enjoying playing your new songs live?

The CD Party is to let all of my fans, media, friends, and my family to come out, and celebrate with me as I launch my debut album on stage with a live performance along with some of my artist friends who will do some songs to add to the evening’s entertainment…

My fans can expect to hear me perform all of my new songs live, on stage for the very first time, plus they can sit down with me one on one and ask me all the things they never had an opportunity to do. I will also be giving everyone at the celebration a copy of my first five songs autographed as a memory of the event

I am loving the opportunity to perform my new songs, it is awesome to be doing it, it’s been a long time coming, but worth every minute of the journey.

I will be performing my songs again with others I wrote and some covers at The Merritt Street Music on the 2nd of September in Merritt; I am looking forward to being there, as I have fond memories of my performance days at Merritt Mountain Fest.

What are your plans to promote the new album throughout the remainder of the year?
I plan to really get out there and perform everywhere I can, because after my songs go to radio, the next most important thing is live shows and lots of them. My manager has already started booking me for the fall and 2011 in BC and Alberta, plus I will be touring hopefully in the spring break from university and Alberta in the summer. I can hardly wait to get started.

I plan to sell my CD in selected retail outlets and chains throughout Canada, and hopefully in beyond as things grow, we will be putting them on line music sites  as well , such as MySpace and YouTube, most definitely at my live shows and I am wishing that all comes my way and all my dreams come true with my new CD. Most importantly I want my fans to love my music, they are the ones that make us who really make it happen, and I love them all for supporting me all through my music journey
