PRESS RELEASE
Fair Shake Productions ― Kelowna’s premier production and promotion company, is focused on booking intimate and interactive music venues in downtown Kelowna.
The Next big one is:
THE NEW ODDS (Formerly Odds) – “Nothing Beautiful Lasts”. That was the title of one of “the Odds” last singles. I guess that was true for a little while. Actually…what the hell were they thinking? The critically and commercially acclaimed post punk power pop band recorded four albums from 1991 to 1996 and then walked away. They’d achieved gold and platinum success and hit the top ten several times. But they weren’t that smart. They didn’t realize that beautiful things just change and come back in new forms.
Craig Northey, Pat Steward and Doug Elliott are back without ever really going away. All they did was make a ton of music under different names and with different collaborators. It started with all of them supporting Northey on his solo album “Giddy Up”. Then they all recorded and wrote on several albums for R&B guitar hero Colin James. They recorded the “Northey Valenzuela” album with Jesse Valenzuela of the Gin Blossoms – featuring the theme from CTV’s “Corner Gas”. They recorded an album as “Strippers Union” with their pal Rob Baker from the Tragically Hip. They recorded an instrumental soul album with killer organist Simon Kendall as “Sharkskin”. Somewhere in there they scored two feature films. It’s been a busy “time off”.
Early this year they began writing songs together and doing a show or two. Their pals “Barenaked Ladies” took them out on a rock festival type cruise ship last January and they needed another guitar player to fill out what they’d written. Their friend Murray Atkinson threw his hat in the ring and it all fell together instantly. Their three year-old temporary name “the Craig Northey Power Trio” wouldn’t work anymore. They weren’t the old “Odds” because they now had a new member….they were “the New Odds”. Just as “Spinal Tap” were once “the Originals” and then “the New Originals” only a little bit different. It was a stupid name to begin with and now at least it is a different stupid name. Rock band names are stupid.
