Hey Rosetta returns to Kelowna

Kind of ironic. I’m heading to Newfoundland tomorrow for 10 days, and I will miss the Hey Rosetta show at the Habitat. HR are one of the up-and-coming bands from Newfoundland, getting national radio play on CBC and recent winners of 3 East Coast Music Awards. This will be a show not to be missed.

Hey Rosetta! is a six-piece Canadian indie rock band from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Known for its energized live shows, the band create a massive, layered sound by incorporating piano, violin and cello into the traditional four-piece garage rock sound.

The band members include Tim Baker (Vocals, Guitar, Piano), Josh Ward (Bass, Backing Vocals), Adam Hogan (Lead Guitar), and Phil Maloney (Drums). The band also contains a string section normally consisting of Kinley Dowling (Violin), and Romesh Thavanathan (Cello), although other musicians substitute while on tour. Their influences include The Beatles and Jeff Buckley, while also incorporating the layered production of contemporary indie bands such as Arcade Fire and Hope of the States.

Dan Mangan, is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Though he spent a considerable amount of his childhood in Ontario, Dan was born in Smithers, British Columbia, and now resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Vintage Song Sessions

VINTAGE SONG SESSIONS will attract more experienced musicians and singers who are enthusiastic about what I call the good old songs. It is essentially a drop-in program but to make sure everyone is familiar with the songs to be played at the session, there needs to be some preparation on a week-by-week basis.
Here is the program as listed by the RCA:
Education/Adults/Music
#412 Vintage Song Sessions

Facilitator: Ray Turner

Working with music of the Beatles and Before, this group will meet weekly to play music by ear and improvise around older songs. Participants will be able to submit song suggestions for each session by logging on to www.bigearsray.com/vintage.html Preparatory work is essential.
The Vintage Song Sessions will be for musicians geared towards the music of the 1920’s through to the 1960’s. Each session will produce a variety of instruments and voices, so a simple, minimally amplified approach is best. A piano will be available. If you are ready to move to the next level, these sessions may be for you. Log on and find out.
There is also the possibility of performance opportunities if a band emerges from the group.
Thursdays Apr 2 – June 25
Price: $5 drop-in
7:00-9:00 pm
More information can be seen at www.bigearsray.com/vintage.html or give me a call at (860) 862-9832

Bend Sinister this Thursday night

The tale of Bend Sinister begins with good friends and a summer of infinite possibilities. The year was 2001 and the vibrancy of Kelowna, BC’s all-ages music scene provided the necessary inspiration for four ambitious musicians fueled by a variety of musical influences to embark on a journey that for lead singer Dan Moxon would continue to this very day. Having performed countless shows in every dive bar and venue that would have them, Bend Sinister established themselves as a household name in their hometown. As the buzz began to circulate throughout the rest of western Canada, Bend Sinister was determined to do whatever was necessary to make the creation of music the focal point of their lives.

You have two choices….

The Divorcees @ the Minstrel Cafe
or
Marianas Trench @ Level

” Those who prefer their roots music raw with a little lap steel twang on the side really need to check out New Brunswick outlaw country hooligans the Divorcees. The Johnny Cash- and Waylon Jennings-inspired tunes on their You Ain’t Gettin’ My Country (Haysale) should give you a good idea of what these shit-kickin’ hombres are all about – hardcore honky-tonkin’ and haulin’ ass.”
– NOW Magazine

Marianas Trench is a Juno award nominated Canadian pop punk band from Vancouver, British Columbia signed to 604 Records. Josh Ramsay started a solo career and needed a supporting band during touring. He managed to recruit high school friend Matt Webb and local musicians Steve Marshall, Morgan Hempsted and Ian Casselman. The band worked out so well that they decided to form a band named Ramsay Fiction. After signing to 604 Records in early 2003, they changed their name and became Marianas Trench.
